I gave my extended family an ultimatum — get a Mac or I drop support. They did and now my phone never rings.

It pains me to think that computers which were less powerful than a modern mobile phone could send people to the moon while modern computers, thousands of times more powerful, are harnessed into sending spam, propagating viruses and surfing pron.

Fuel burn rate and trajectory calculations - easy.

Yet, when it comes to computers. These same people who throw a raving screaming tantrum when a button on their new DVD player is loose will accept a computer with a faulty operating system.

What a steaming pile. The average person doesn't know his system is faulty. They don't know how use basic, basic html, or even understand the difference between the BIOS on the computer, windows and a program. This "borg" thinks that everyone should be as geeky as him and actually writes this piece insulting over 90% of computer users. Why? My guess is he has a huge ego.

So in other words, why do people use computers?

And please save the “if they had a Mac or a Linux PC, there wouldn’t be any issues”. That just shows the person saying it knows less about computers than the people who keep screwing up their own machines.

What's a "surfing pron"?

A totally faulty premise. While I know a whopping lot about computers if I had a problem with my cars EFI system I wouldn't have a clue if it was a problem of programming, manufacturing, a failing component or lack of user maintenance or even a bit of user abuse...

That doesn't make me a barnyard animal, it's what happens with complex systems and especially ones that allows the user to really screw it up, a basic premise of the whole "personal" computing movement.

As for all the wags that moan about poor computer operating systems it sounds to me that you think that the market is right for a good one. Excellent, go write one.

Yeah, didn't think so.

Did you know there's an election going on tomorrow? Why waste bandwidth trying to convert people to your favorite operating system. Most just know how to browse the Internet and check their email.

>If I remember correctly, the computers of yesteryear were of higher quality and far more reliable than the latest personal computers of today. The excuse that the code is more complex and does more does not wash with me. The real reason is that not enough quality control is exercised.

This is what we call rose colored memories.

I mean what yesteryear are we picking? Windows ME? Yeah, that was surely very reliable. Packard Bell clones, oh year brilliant pieces of hardware those were. Mac OS 7.X (pick any) was another steaming pile. I had to buy a third party product to try and make it reasonably stable. I’ve seen dogs in both OSes and hardware, and today is certainly no worse than before.

Yes, the world is loaded with more malware these days (which is a good reason to play on a Mac). However the OSes of today are better. OS X and Windows 7 are good OSes and appreciably better than their predecessors (well XP was eventually patched enough to be good and solid, and is much less of a resource hog than 7).

I’m on my second PC in fifteen years.

My first Dell started out with windows 3.1, upgraded to 98, upgraded again to Windows XP. The little trooper ran pretty much 24/7 for over 10 years. Never had a single problem with it. Added some RAM and storage space to it a couple of times, but no software problems.

Second Dell is now a couple years old and has been just as reliable, so far, started out with Windows XP and now upgraded to 7.

I always had/have some kind of antivirus, some paid for, some free, set it to automatically update both the programs and the antivirus, and it was virtually invisible and maintenance free.

I have gotten exactly one virus in life, and it was my fault for clicking it. No software can protect a person who is dead set on installing a virus. :) Never have trouble with spyware or malware either. No check has ever found any. Not sure where people get that stuff, but I don’t get it where I go... and I’m on the internet ALL DAY.

Punch line. It works pretty good, and it’s just not all that hard to keep a computer running Windows running good. Don’t try to dink with it all the time, keep it updated, and maybe stay away from porn sites, and it works really really well. :~)

The problem here is that the author assumes most people want to, or should want to, be computer geeks and tune up and maintain the OS. This is similar to thinking that everyone should want to be knowledgeable enough about their car’s inner workings to rebuild the engine.

Most people, including me, just want to use their computer to do stuff (or their car to go places), they don’t want to have to become experts at what makes them go. They want to operate the programs that do stuff.

Personally, I would prefer it if I were unaware my computer had an operating system. The ideal OS would be quite invisible.

A “faulty” operating system is the fault of the user and the user alone. Even Linux can be easily compromised if the end user doesn’t know what he is doing (i.e., runs as root, etc.).

Coming from the old main frame world. if something didn't work right once released to production you didn't go to bed until it was fixed.

Then along came Bill Gates, with his "we will fix it in the next release" mentality. It is pure laziness in my opinion.

I also don't discount "the farm the code out to the cheapest programmer in India or China" mentality. I have supervised these type of programmers. While they are good, they take shortcuts and you must be ever vigilant to make sure the code is hardy enough to with stand the real world.

In addition, I look at our office where we can barely get the system backed up in 24 hours. A lot of the time it doesn't make it. The smaller systems simply can't do as much as the big old machines used to.

I’m glad this moron is such an authority.

Since he knows so much about creating operating systems that:

* will meet all user needs and wants
* work bug-free with the vast (and constantly growing) variety of complex hardware out there
* work bug-free with the vast (and constantly growing) variety of complex software out there
* are user friendly enough for most people
* allow for the free flow of desired information
* and simultaneously remain impervious to the vast (and constantly growing) array of computer hackers and security attacks put forth by well-financed crooks,

I invite him to write one.

I’ll be waiting.

What a stupid article. Mac, Unix, Linux, they all have issues. You cannot possibly say that year after year with businesses, scientists, and all kinds of people using Windows without a fuss means Windows is so faulty that it should be singled out as being faulty. Illogical argument.

This is just another bullsh*t article claiming Linux is perfect, which we all know is not the truth. Just more propagana from the little kid crowd. Grow up and stop being an angry idiot. Mcirosoft is not the “establishment”.
