On so many levels.
What they did not show was the fact that the man had been laying on a mattress for years outside the building where The Divine One was visiting. As The Divine One left the building he touched the man and said in a loud voice “rise and walk.” The man did. The Divine One then took three welfare checks and five food stamps and distributed them to ten thousand ACORN workers. Henceforth, this event was known as the “miracle of the checks and stamps.”
I don't know if it's true for the person in the picture, but I can tell you that many of the ones you see begging for scraps and bereft of pride only have themselves to blame.
I would guess that the age of that guy is in the mid 40's, at least. Twenty or so years ago, he may have been one of the ones rejecting the examples and teachings of other black members of society, calling them "suckers", "Uncle Toms", "tools of the white man", et. al. for going to school, speaking proper English, not being influenced by racial hucksters, etc.
Now 20 years later, when the "chickens have come home to roost" so to speak, that guy has no job, no education, a jail record, and who knows what else. Instead, he is reduced to begging and pleading for "pie".
Just my guess, but I won't be shocked at all if this is that guy's life history. I've personally seen this play out in scores of black men (and women).
