Original was nothing special. The remake was ‘creep you out twenty years later’ awesome.

The screenplay in Carpenter's version of "The Thing" is far closer to
the original story, "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr, than the Hawks version.
However, I found the gory special effects in the Carpenter remake to be sickening rather than scary. I also thought the Hawks version was a better overall movie.
