A woman died of blood poisoning two days after having her tongue pierced as a birthday treat, an inquest was told on Thursday.
Amanda Taylor wanted the stud so she could look like royal Zara Phillips and pop star Pink, her family said. The 34-year-old collapsed within 48 hours of having the 2cm (0.8in) steel bar put through her tongue.
Just before she died, she wrote on Facebook: ‘I feel like crap.’
Before yesterday’s hearing, Miss Taylor’s mother Lorraine, 61, said: ‘I was against [the piercing] and Amanda never did anything unless she had my blessing.
‘But her friend was having it done too so I said: “You’re going to be 34 – I’ll give you my blessing but I’m still not 100 per cent happy”.
‘We’re a very close family. If I’d said no, she wouldn’t have done it. I wish I said no.’ Miss Taylor visited Silverhand Jewellery in Cardiff in April to have the stud put in.
The next day, her tongue was swollen and she had a sore throat, the inquest heard.
The care worker was prescribed penicillin for suspected tonsillitis but later died at home from septicaemia and acute tonsillitis.
Police and public health officials found ‘unhygienic practices’ at Silverhand Jewellery, the hearing was told. But tests failed to link bacteria at the parlour with the infection.
Miss Taylor, of Caerphilly in south Wales, died because bacteria entered her blood through the piercing, said deputy Gwent coroner Liz James, recording a verdict of death by natural causes.
Silverhand Jewellery said it had followed ‘stringent hygiene procedures’.
You sure they're not confusing cause and effect?
I don’t have much sympathy for stupidity.

Rebecca was given a nose-ring as an engagement present in the OT. I once had a teen girl (a friends, not mine) use that as an argument to justify a new ear piercing.
I told her that it was before the giving of the law (see Leviticus 19:28).
We came with all the holes we need.
well some women do it for kissing and other purposes similiar. My ex had one and let me tell you ... cold metal really didn’t do it for me in either area must be a matter of taste.
Of course there is the Chris Rock joke about men who get the procedure done.

Please believe me, I am NOT in favor of any piercings. However, when I was in my 30’s and performing music in casinos every night, I really needed to be wearing earrings, but the lobes on my ears were so non-existent, the “regular” clip-on earrings simply wouldn’t work.
I got my ears pierced, and never anything else. Some women just cannot wear earrings unless their ears are pierced.

And then there are those with "Tramp Stamps" on their backside...
They divorced and the pierced ears were the problem. Who wudda thunk it.
So, that’s what disfiguring your body can do to you. Now she looks like Michael Jackson, dead.

My favourite term for stuff like this is one used by police and coroners here: “Death by misadventure”.

Somehow, I don't think she will complain.
I am amazed that these people do not have more problems. I have dealt with all kinds of fistulae in my surgical practice. They are a perfect zone for bacteria to be sequestered in a warm moist enviroment where, if an obstruction occurs not allowing any buildup of detritus evauate the channel, 100% become infected. Then a surgical drainage is required. Rectal fistuae, pilonial fistulae, traumatic fistulae,...I have seen urethrocutaneous fistulae from the male urethra through to the skin as a result of gonorrhea. These things are potentially very, very dangerous.
