Hispanic people in the United States live nearly three years longer than the population overall, say researchers whove released the first government study to confirm extended life expectancy in the nations largest minority group.
At birth, Hispanics can expect to live 80.6 years; that's about 2.5 years longer than the non-Hispanic white population and about 7.7 years longer than blacks. Overall, the life expectancy for the total population was 77.7 years, according to 2006 data used in a report issued Wednesday by the National Center for Health Statistics. The longer lifespan is apparent despite well-documented health risks for Hispanics, including higher rates of obesity and diabetes and lower levels of education, income and access to health care, say researchers who have been puzzling over whats known as the Hispanic paradox for years.
The reason that its paradoxical is we know that mortality is highly correlated with socio-economic status, said Elizabeth Arias, the NCHS demographer who led the study. With this population, that is not the case. The advantage we see must be explained by something else.

They put the lard in lard@ss.
What is an Hispanic?
They are the chunkiest little people. This study should send Bloomberg and Mika Brezenski into a total frenzy!
I worked in Mexico and ate in the comedor many times. This article contradicts what I saw. Mexican food can be healthy. Problem is they put way too much salt in the food. They use lard in the tortillas. A favorite food is pig skin with fat attached in soup. There were over 500-1,000 people in the factory where I worked. I saw no men over age 45. On the day of the dead they put up a shrine with pictures of deceased people who had worked at the factory. The people died in their 30s and 40s. They have a high rate of diabetes. They have health conditions that are chronic, long term, and expensive. We will pay for it. MEXICANs (God love them) ARE NOT A HEALTHY POPULATION. Their lack of education has a lot to do with it. You should come to Southern California and see all obese Mexican kids. This MSNBC propaganda does not pass the smell test.
Perhaps their typical occupations are different. Less office work, more footwork and manual labor in other words, less sedentary lifestyle.
Chunky and short but usually as obese as some caucasians and blacks can get.
I love that! As if there are bouncers keeping Hispanics out of hospitals.
Hey, if I got free healthcare, food stamps, housing subsidies, free legal representation and had hundreds of tax funded outfits like Maldef protecting me, I’d likely live longer too!
Perhaps, perhaps not (see example below). Couldn't help but wonder what an estimate of what the costs incurred were for the attempt to save this illegal alien:
USBP Weekly Blotter - October 7 - October 13
Reported on October 8, 2010 Blaine Sector A Border Patrol agent, assisted by two civilians, attempted to rescue the victim of a car accident near Sequim, Washington. The victim's car drove off a bluff, falling 50 feet into the ocean. The agent and civilians attempted to extricate the victim from the car with no success. The agent remained in the water with the victim and was able to coordinate local emergency medical services (EMS) response. The agent continued to assist rescue personnel after their arrival on scene. The victim was extracted from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital via U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. The victim later succumbed to serious injuries received during the crash.
RE Post 15 above. There was nothing to indicate in the Border Patrol report that the driver was or was not an illegal alien - looking at it a second time around.
Interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was somehow another vitamin D thing.
Most likely some kind of statistical quirk, along the lines of:
Hispanics who die today in their 80s may have grown up or come to this country at a time when spartan living and hard physical work was the norm -- and the combination made them healthier than today's generation, which often gets neither.
Or, perhaps many Hispanics return to their home countries when they become old enough to think about their end-of-life, and where they want to be buried.
Those who decide to die here may be just the ones most happy with their lives -- and happy lives often mean longer lives...
Of course, it would be most interesting to learn if the typical Hispanic diet was actually more healthy for them. ;-)
Mexicans are Hispanic but not all Hispanics are Mexican...
