Police: 77 Cats Found in Two Cars

Two Troy women are charged with animal cruelty after Bennington, VT police say they had 77 cats living in two cars.

Police think Regina Millard and Bertha Ryan may have been trying to find homes for the rescued strays by driving from shelter to shelter.

Police say they learned of the situation after someone saw the pair sleeping in the cars with the cats.

Bennington police allegedly found a dead cat in the trunk of one car, as well as plates of food and a litter box.

> I’m with you. 30 cats per car has always been my limit.

Long ago, I had a girlfriend who had 13 cats, and had to move from one apartment to another. She loaded all 13 cats into her (small) car, using cardboard cat carriers and two cats per carrier (the matriarch female got her own).

I had foolishly volunteered to ride shotgun, in case mayhem broke out in the car while she was driving. No use having an accident, right?

You cannot, absolutely cannot, imagine the noise level of those 13 cats in a small car.

No, she's not still my girlfriend, thanks for not asking. :)

More than 30 cats in a car??? Impossible. Simply impossible.

Having been a wildlife rehabilitator in the past, and having done more than a few squirrels, I can say, "YOU'RE RIGHT!"

LOL!

There was a squirrel trapped between 2 opposing lanes of heavy traffic, walnut clenched in mouth, freaking out because no matter which way he went he was in dire peril and the drivers just couldn’t be bothered to stop half a second to let him get across the road.
[people are so heartless, sometimes]

I always carry a “critter rescue kit” and stopped and ran over to him, threw my capture blanket over him, and hauled him back to the car, dodging traffic as I ran.

The then-husband took me to a nearby liquor store to snag a transport box out of the dumpster.

I sat there, window down, awaiting his return when said squirrel blasted out of the blanket, used my bottom lip as a spring board, launched himself out the open window and took off across the lawn of an apartment complex, *still* clutching his precious walnut.

[every time I see “Ice Age”, I LMAO]

I still have the scar on my lip from his needle sharp claw.

Bless his heart though, he finally made it to safety.

[furry little ingrate]....;D

I was guessing you needed a stiff drink after doing something so dangerous.

BTW, based on your story, that squirrel had a serious substance abuse problem.

That’s what I keep thinking. The smell of one litterbox times thirty inside of a car..... Really!

Is this bag designed for animals? Where did you get it?

What "bag"?
My rescue kit?
It's just a collection of possibles for dealing with wild animals.
A blanket to throw over and catch them.
Heavy leather gloves.
Antibiotic ointment.
Peroxide.
Ordinarily a pet carrier [missing that day]
Bottled water for cleaning wounds.
Gauze.
An empty 5 gallon bucket for amphibian/reptile victims.
[which also serves to hold everything]
I have a light weight koi pond net that I've had with me in case of injured birds.
Phone numbers for the local DNR/SPCA/wildlife rehabbers.
Just general emergency stuff until I could get them proper care or relocate them to a safer place.
It just sort of evolved over time with things being added as situations arose where I wished I'd had [fill in the blank] that time but then did, the next time.

The dreaded “Black Walnut Habit”.

You see the little Nut Junkies everywhere, dodging traffic and lawnmowers just to get their fix.

[we have hundreds of black walnut trees in my area...it’s a veritable “nut crack” house]....:))
