In what will surely provide a boost to Google's Android platform outside the smartphone arena, computer maker Acer reportedly announced on Wednesday that all of its upcoming dual-core netbooks will run both Android and Windows 7.
The announcement was made at Acer's Taiwan launch of its new dual-core Aspire One netbooks, which will feature Intel's Atom 550 processor as well as Android, according to a report in DigiTimes.
The move is expected to increase demand by providing "more efficiency to consumers" while costing Acer very little, the report said.
Also included in the new "Happy" Aspire One netbooks will be a built-in 250GB hard drive, the Taipei Times reported. [http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2010/10/07/2003484712] Priced at US$431, the machines will reportedly be available in Taiwan this month.
Citing recent figures from Gartner, Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin also asserted that tablets will not replace netbooks anytime soon. Acer reportedly expects to ship 10 million netbooks this year.

Android ping.
Microsoft screwed the pooch when they went from XP to 7.
Netbooks...hardware still looking for a purpose.
Cool.
Can I get one with Android and Windows 98SE?
First look at Acer Aspire One D255 with Android

This was actually the cheapest of the several dual-boot Aspire One netbooks launched last week. While the other models seemed to have slightly better hardware specifications, their higher price was (presumably) also justified by the presence of the newer Windows 7 on them (again dual-booting with Android).
I just (about a month ago) put my W98SE machine out to pasture. Kept the drives tho in case of ancient needs.
And someone asked why a netbook. For cruises and all around travel. Much more convenient than a laptop. I first bought the Acer and returned it in less than a week. They wouldn’t talk support without my credit card number. Bye bye Acer. Bought a Samsung and they’ll talk anytime even to just say hi. And I’m happy with the box. Wiped 7 and installed XP Pro without a blink. Just got back from my first cruise with it.
I think it's mostly because they went through Vista. I haven't heard anything real bad about 7.
Still wouldn't get it though.
If I need it cheap I'll go with the Penguin. If I got the dough I'll go with a Mac.
I respectfully and thoroughly disagree.
As Tribune7 said, the problem was Vista, and also the long delay between major releases. Win7 released in 2006 would have been a huge success and every Windows user would be running it by now very happily.
Vista was designed to be the Hardware Vendors' Full-Employment and Sales Boost Act. It flopped because it wasn't nearly good enough to justify the expense of new hardware.
Win7 is Vista-Done-Right, and is a worthy successor to XP.
Besides, what else would you have had them do? XP-SP4? XP was stretched to the limit already. When does it stop?
The only problem you'll have is finding drivers for 98. Otherwise, I'll bet it runs like a bat outta hell.
