Vanity post- looking for recommendations on how to buy commodities
me | October 11,2010 | Joesjane

Posted on 10/11/2010 7:06:19 AM PDT by joesjane

Good morning freepers. I watch the markets as I am sure a lot of freepers do. I have been interested in silver and other commodities but don't know how to go about investing in them. I have a 401 K but of course it is in the market not in commodities so I would like to diversify. Does anyone out there have any advice on how to go about investing (I would like to do it online)? I would also appreciate any lessons learned if you feel like sharing. Have a wonderful morning.

Not only no, but Hell No!

Given the government's omniscience in the banking and lending biz, it won't be long before the majority of housing is subject to their whims.......feel like making all your bathrooms 'handicapable'? Feel like spending the money to add wheelchair ramps and pushbutton doors? Feel like spending the money to "greenify" your property?

Hell no!

Some simple advice:

1. Try to “average in” so you don’t hit an unfortunate peak.
2. Buy in large amounts to save on price (this advice is contrary to item 1.
3. If you have a large budget (over $20k per transaction), go to a deep discount high-volume seller like tulving.com, otherwise try nwtmint.com for smaller quantities.
4. eBay is a good source for “junk” silver coins at a fair market price in small-medium quantities.
5. If you buy gold, 1 oz. Eagles, Maple Leafs, and Krugerrands are the best option.
6. If you keep it at home, don’t let anyone know you are investing in precious metals. A rumor can lead to a home invasion.
7. If it’s your IRA/401k, you can invest in exchange traded funds like SLV. Some are suspicious of these, but if you’re leaving it in an IRA, you’re already giving a lot of trust to the system. Note that you can also invest in real estate in your IRA, which few people are aware of, and I’m talking about your choice, not some REIT.

Well Keith let me tell you a little about myself since you have obviously misunderstood my intent.
I am all about doing the hard work and research myself, in fact I am a research fiend.
I have been on FR for a while and thought I would use the friends on here to avoid some pitfalls if people were willing to share.
Thank you so much for all your help, your responses have given me a chuckle this morning.
BTW, I did google commodities trading :-)

Bubba,
thanks for the tips. I will check into all you have listed. It is confusing for a newbie to jump into this. There is so much information out there!

That is how I feel. Reading the information coming out about the forclosure freeze makes me think the property situation is going to get much worse. When prices first started falling I considered buying residential property but not now. I have been looking at undeveloped land but the prices have been rising steadily, I think everyone is thinking about bugging out.

From some one who is posting on FR to get investment advice, you sure seem to have strong opinions.

I have 42 units and I am making a fortune doing it.

But if you say “hell no” thats fine with me. Less competition for me

I know what you mean.

The ‘great unwashed’ historically get into the market just as it is about to crash.

When you see unknowing people asking what they should buy, then that means the public is starting to get into the market

I don't know where you get the idea that I was posting to get financial advice. I was posting my opinion on what looms in the real estate world.

Best of luck to you with the apartments; I hope you don't end up getting regulated out of business.

If you have some extra "play" money, you might want to think about shorting a few banks/morgage companies at risk:

Note for the historically interested... this post is a sell signal.

Is that post like someone saying they are looking for information on how to flip a house they just bought in 2007?

I have been in banking/investment banking for 30 years. If you don’t have a good working understanding of the commodities market, STAY OUT.

It's a little more like someone looking for information on pooling their money with other investors to buy condos in 2006...

Thanks! It is one of those things I watch all the time but haven’t jumped in, just don’t know how. All I have as far as investments right now is a 401k and that worries me. Definitely can’t afford gold

Hey!!! I bathe daily LOL, but you are probably right, if people like me are asking then there is your sign.
