Are Baby Boomers Likely To Live Longer Than Previous Generations?

Are "Baby Boomers" likely to live longer than previous generations? I'm not so sure. Yes, some people are fit, but what about all those that did drugs, smoked, are overweight with diabetes, heart problems, etc., etc. I suspect large numbers of them are going to start dropping like flies. Am I wrong?

While we all are waiting for the 2010 Census numbers, here are the survial numbers for men and women bsed on age from the 2000 Census.

(These numbers might be easier to see at the link.)

That certainly makes it clear.

I agree but not for the things you mentioned. ObamaCare is going to take most of us out.

I turned 40 this year 3 months after my mom died at 72. My dad died when I was 28.

My grandma is 102 years old.

I look at pictures of Americans before the Baby Boomer generation and am struck by how thin people looked back then. There is really no precedent for the widespread prevalence of obesity which we see today. Obesity is now recognized as being rivaled only by smoking as a threat to health and longevity.

An expected feature of cars today is numerous cupholders. And what are those cupholders for? Mostly for soft drinks composed essentially of sugared water. No wonder we are so fat.

There has probably been some increase in life expectancy of Baby Boomers as compared to earlier generations because of the remarkable decrease in deaths from cardiovascular diseases. Controlling high blood pressure has had a big impact IMO.

I’m one of the older baby boomers and I have had cancer. Never did no drugs, ever. Smoked, though. I think my oldest brother is going to outlive us all. He was born in 1940.

Also the widespread availability of interventional cardiology.

(at least until the rationing of BaraqqiCare kicks in)

The elderly always die in disproportionate numbers during the deprivation of a civil war.

Is that your maternal grandmother, or your fraternal grandmother?
I’m 62. Both my parents died in their 80’s. Grandparents that didn’t die in accidents, lived to almost 90. I remember that grandma keeping two cigarettes going at the same time.
Heaven looks better all the time.

There is just so much more food and different kinds than there was in the 60s.

Back then American cuisine really was pretty bland, now all kinds of delicious and spicy foods are readily available and a lot of folks just overindulge.

Combine that with the fact that kids are all spending their time video gaming and snacking. A far cry from going out to the field for a pickup baseball game or riding bikes -with no helmets- or other calorie burning activities.

The supposition has always been that the 40M Baby Boomers are going to be a huge drain on the SS system. My question is, based on the overall health of this and subsequent groups, are the projections vastly overstated?

Yes. Today many American kids are ferried to and from activities organized for them by adults. They ride in big “minivans” with multiple cupholders. In my youth, we rode bikes or walked for miles to meet our friends and engage in improvised activities like war simulations. We roamed the woods and fields. There were no sedentary fantasies like computer games, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
