An heir to the house of Habsburg has called on the European Court of Human Rights to overturn Austria's ban on members of former ruling families running for president, his lawyer said Tuesday.
Because of this constitutional rule, Ulrich Habsburg-Lothringen was not allowed to stand as a candidate for the presidential election in April.
His lawyer, Rudolf Vouk, said the Strasbourg court's ruling would take several years. "But it should work out until the next election," he said, looking ahead to the 2016 polls.
Citizens have shown little interest in the campaign of Habsburg- Lothringen, a third-degree nephew of Otto von Habsburg, the son of the last emperor, Charles.
When Habsburg-Lothringen tried to collect support signatures before the election, only some 3,000 voters responded.
Social Democratic President Heinz Fischer, as well as the center-right People's Party and the Greens, have signaled their readiness to end the ban.
However, the official position of the ruling Social Democratic Party is not so positive. The party wants to make sure that the Habsburgs will not launch claims on their former property after becoming equal citizens in terms of election law.
Vouk called such arguments "dishonest."
"Everyone who has studied the matter a bit knows that one has nothing to do with the other," he said.

Before the current Great Recession is over many Europeans will be begging the Hapsburgs to take over and accept all the blame.
just as Holy Muslim Emperor Obummer does.
Strange. The law seems to imply that the Austrians don’t trust themselves. If Hitler had offspring, would it behoove Germany to ban them from office? Would Americans be afraid of a direct descendent of George III (born on American soil) running for POTUS?
Maybe wait a couple of generations. I’d be more worried about cronies of some bad king wanting to put the king’s son on the throne so they can continue their corrupt business. Like if Saddam Hussein’s sons had been allowed to run for office in the new government of Iran. (I don’t know if Saddam’s relatives were actually barred or not.) But if it were Saddam’s great-grandchild, who cares? The cronies of Saddam would not be there any more and the great-grandchild would probably have to win on his own merits for his own reasons.

It is pathetic to have Hapsburgs kneel to the EU. Although I have a soft-spot in my heart for the Hapsburgs, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was the prison of nations. Even if Franz Ferdinand had lived, become Emperor, and given Slavs "representation" in making Croats co-equal to the German Austrians and the Hungarians (the Hungarians would have screamed bloody murder), it would still have been a prison of nations and fallen apart. It's only virtue was as a mixture of racial and religious tolerance tied to Catholic Heritage. To have the Hapsburgs go to the EU is appaling. Many members of my family are rolling over in their unmarked graves. (Unmarked because they as Jews were better Austrians than that syphilitic corporal.)
