Michelle Obama's campaign fashion
Politico.com ^ | 10-4-10 | KARIN TANABE & AMIE PARNES

Michelle Obama’s sartorial taste is well-established at this point: bright dresses with bold patterns, shifts in colors that would send most women running in terror. Pantsuits? Only rarely: She’s left them to the likes of Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. But when she heads out to campaign for Democrats later this month, will Obama tone things down to leave room for her message to ring loud and clear? When you’re practically a fashion icon, what’s appropriate for the stump?

POLITICO spoke with six tastemakers to find out how Obama can hit the right fashion notes on the trail. Their advice? Don’t get too conservative, dress to look approachable, and don’t be afraid of showing off those arms.

Lucky magazine Editor-in-Chief Brandon Holley told POLITICO that Obama should continue her habit of wearing “young designers and affordable elegance.”

“When she wears a J. Crew cardigan, it tells women across the country that she’s approachable,” Holley said.

Nor should she be afraid of re-wearing. Obama, Holley said, isa master at "shopping her own closet and not doing the Sarah Palin shopping spree." This also makes her more relatable to American women.

But need she ditch her signature dresses and go the more conservative route? For the Sept. 11 memorial in Shanksville, Pa., Obama chose a relatively staid cornflower-blue silk suit by Narciso Rodriguez.

Are these people living on the same planet? What American woman can relate to Michelle's $500 tennis shoe?. And since when did Sarah Palin ever wear $500 shoes?

These people who write about Michelle always leave out the truth and keep spouting ridiculous statements about her occasional shopping at J Crew as if J. Crew was cheap, and as if Michelle's wardrobe is not full of very expensive items from weird fashion designers. Let me see her shop at WalMart where most of Americans now have to go, because they have lost their jobs, and then someone can say she "relates" to most Americans.

If this is as good as this thing can look all dolled up and socially presentable.....one can only imagine the absolute horror of waking up in the early morning next to it.

Was called "wolf ugly" when I was in the military....and in this case, that is far too kind.

Jackie Kennedy's TV tour of the WH, her trips to India and France (the latter w/ with JFK) cemented her elegant image in the minds of America. Mrs O was all set to morph into the Black Jackie---the trips, the Oval redo, the wardrobe---until she bombed in Spain.

Mrs O's idea of fashion.......she ordered a coat from Bunmi Olaye......

Bunmi Olaye’s warrior-like woman collection (pictured above). Inspired by the mysterious, men-only Leopard Masquerade cult of the Efik tribe in the Nigerian province of Calabar, mixed with references to the high-collars, tight waists and voluminous sleeves of the Victorian era The look plays with proportions, gorgeous colours, vibrant prints with strong shoulders and enhanced waists.

And it seems this designer is already mixing in the right circles. Last year she established her own label which now has a celebrity client list which includes Mel B (Spice Girl), Mischa Barton, Alesha Dixon and Estell.......and the WH called to order a coat.

A Nigerean native, Bunmi already seems to be making at least small waves. Her experience w/ Alexander McQueen is evident in her designs. Slated to show at Africa Fashion Week later this month, Bunmi was asked to explain her collection: "The collection explores the feeling of a warrior-like woman in power. " Even if she doesn't find herself a star in the international industry, there's no doubt that Bunmi'll find herself a rightful place in African fashion.

==================================

Forget the WH TV tour. Michele is showcasing American dance.

Ms. Holley, 43, is the editor in chief of Shine, Yahoo’s rapidly growing Web site for women, which will celebrate its second anniversary next month. She serves up the same sort of fare there — at shine.yahoo.com — that she did at Jane: advice about cheap fashion, sex and health and, when all else fails, a pointed item about Sarah Palin, who never ceases to inspire debate on Shine.

Mrs. O wears an Alaia dress, similar in style (though shorter, v-neck and red, here) to the gown worn for the Nobel Peace Prize gala in Oslo last year.
