RED SOX DENY YANKEES A CHANCE AT DIVISION CROWN
TSN ^ | Oct. 3, 2010 | Staff

Jed Lowrie hit two home runs and knocked in three as the Red Sox handed the Yankees an 8-4 loss on the final day of the season to deny New York a chance at a second straight American League East title.

...While Boston (89-73) is sitting out postseason play for the first time since 2006, it cost rival New York (95-67) a shot at wrapping up homefield advantage throughout the AL playoffs, as the Yankees needed a win and a Tampa Bay loss Sunday to do so.

The two teams came into the final day of the regular season with identical records but the Rays won out for the division by way of a 10-8 advantage in the head-to-head series, saddling the Yanks with wild card status.

Ortiz bunt single...

The inning started in unorthodox fashion with David Ortiz laying down a bunt single toward third against the shift. He was replaced for a pinch-runner in perhaps his final game in a Red Sox uniform and left to a standing ovation that included a curtain call.

The Rays won today, so what the Sox did today was totally irrelevant.

Did you get the feeling that neither the Yankees nor the Rays really wanted this division title?

The poor Devil Rays are now stuck facing a well-rested Cliff Lee twice in a 5 game series. The Rays are a fine team, so they may prevail.

I would have much rather faced the Yankees. I think the Rangers matched up better, than they do against the Rays.

And now, our games are likely to come during the day, instead of at night, which really sucks.

I thought the Red Sox were the arch rivals of the Yankees? No? When did that change?

Can we next expect the Packers to throw a game to the Bears? Oh, wait ...

Heavens to Mergatroid. Is beisbol still going on? When do the playoffs start? Thanksgiving? Christmas? New Years?

Will this season even be over before spring training begins?

Good points. This year would have been a great pennant race between the Yankees and Tampa Bay, except for the fact that we knew that, based on their won/loss records, that one would win the division and the other would get the wild card.

I’ve heard that changes could happen in the playoff format. For example, they might add another wild card team in each league, but in that case, the two wild cards would play a series to see who gets to advance, while the 3 division winners take a few days off.

I hate that the World Series ends in November now. Is the extra TV money really worth it to stretch it out and gamble that you will have bad weather????

Giants beat the Padres, 3-0, today, to win the NL West and eliminate the Padres. Giants are looking good to get to the World Series.

Misdirected is right.

Has anyone here checked the Twins/Yankees history?

I'm guessing the Yanks made DAMN sure the Bosox won today.

“Giants are looking good to get to the World Series.”

It will be an upset if anyone beats the Phillies.

The Yankees have had very good results against Minnesota in the ALDS. They’ve got their roster in order; they’ll be fne.

I’m a Yanks fan but they have stumbled into the post season

They did that in 2000 too, if I recall, and that turned out pretty well.

The Twins are playing the ALDS without Justin Morneau.

Their bullpen is pretty good with Capps, Rauch, Fuentes, and Mijares, all of whom have been closers, but the Yankees have a better lineup and rotation.
