Anyone familiar with what the federal government has been planning and doing should have no illusions about where all of this is going to wind up. If this continues, and I see no indication otherwise, loyal American patriots are very likely to have to fight law enforcement at all three levels in order to defend and protect their constitutional rights. While I hope this doesn't happen, I am neither a dreamer nor an optimist. And if it does, I'll be damned if I'm going to give pet-dog shooting LEOs any breaks.

Cops should carry a few milk bones.

If they possessed any skills of observation at all they could have reasoned from the dog's behavior that there was no intruder in the house. I guess cops no longer try to figure out what is going on they just crash into the scene with guns drawn and trigger fingers itching.

Did they just leave the bloody body lying in the back yard?

"While circling the rear perimeter, lab advanced on officers in a threatening manner before being shot and killed."

"Oh, yeah, and then an angry little kid them came running at us so we shot him too. We couldn't take him to the pound with the dog, so we laid him on the picnic table. It's going to rain, so I hope he doesn't get too wet. Good luck. Sincerely, Officer Friendly."

I don’t know if it has become policy. I’ve seen video of cops taking numerous bites from attacking pit bulls before shooting. And I do believe that if an officer really feels he is in danger he should shoot the dog first and worry about it later. I feel the same way about an officer shooting bad guys. The important thing is to go home that night.

Cops have mothers, fathers, kids, dogs and cats just like we do. Many are animal lovers. I don’t know any cops that would automatically shoot a dog just because it growled at them and barked. But I tend to filter out creepy people in my life.

Just like teachers, boy scout leaders and priests that molest kids there are bad apples in any profession. The problem with this profession is that they are armed and dangerous when the brain isn’t functioning properly.

I’m more likely to wonder how well this police department screens their officers. Not all departments put officers through psychological screenings. I believe it should be mandatory. But that’s just me.

Even so, some nut jobs slip through the cracks. I would expect that. And I would also expect a full investigation and accounting of the event. With no coverup and consequences if the officer was found to have made a bad decision.

People also seem to forget that you have only a split second in most cases to make life and death decisions. There isn’t a whole lot of time to run a poll or debate an issue before you act. Doing so could end up with a dead officer.

Lots of people like to second guess the police. Most times when you are scared and the adrenaline is running you make the decision that seems to give you the best chance of survival rather than win you a popularity contest with the public.

I have a 3 year old yellow male lab & they won’t bite. I’m sick of the police who kill these dogs just because they want to kill. Some day one of the owners will flip because they “want to”.

Labs are harmless. They will lick a person & wag their tail instead of biting etc.

what did they mean he growed and barked? don’t police dogs do the same things? Good Lord...this is so sad and am sorry for the owners to lose their beloved friend in this manner. The world is mad anymore. ugliness, brutality, vile and just plain mean.

The ‘powers that be’ want us to dislike or even hate the police. This will enforce the ‘siege mentality’ many LEO’s have. It will make it easier for these cops do arrest and fire upon the citizens of their own community when told to do so.

Notice I use the word citizen. Any time you hear a cop use the term ‘civilian’, ask him if he is acting as a member of the armed forces. Then remind him he is not in the military; but a civilian employee of the community.

"Labs are harmless."

I used to think that until my Lab took out two groundhogs this summer. She sure scares the new mail carriers after being trained by the previous long term mailman to expect pats and maybe a treat.

I hate to be critical of those who supposedly protect and serve us but don’t you think they could have used pepper spray first? Perhaps their chief has made a policy and protocol of “shoot first, ask questions later”. If it had been a pit bull or vicious breed that was a trained killer then using their service weapon would be appropriate.

This just looks very bad for a Police Dept. that gets a lot of adverse publicity.

Please rethink your position on this.
Under the correct circumstances, ANY dog will bite. We currently have 14 dogs, 40 (+/-) cats, seven horses, and more dad-gummed wildlife than we can count.
We would like to believe that none of the horses will kick or bite, that none of the dogs will bite, and that none of the cats will claw, scratch or bite.
The reality, however, is just the opposite. Our oldest lab, a 14 year old Yellow Lab is slow to anger, but once there, she will let you know. The smallest, a chihuahua, is a saint, until you rile him up. The biggest one, a Great Dane going on nine years old, will sit your lap in a heartbeat, but don’t mess with her when she’s outside.
My oldest horse, a 31 year old Arabian gelding, was the best back-rub I’ve ever had, but he would guard the pasture gates with a singular focus if there was anyone around that he didn’t know (including relatives).
It is an utter myth to think that any animal (including man) won’t revert to it’s ‘fight or flight’ instincts when provoked...ANY animal...even the one in the cute pictures of the kids pulling on their ears and poking fingers in their eyes and mouths.

A lab is not a pitbull, especially a 12 year old lab. This cop should be drug out in the street by his heels.

I didn’t say these two situations were equal. I was trying to illustrate that there are police officers who are not quick on the trigger to shoot an animal.

I see however you are intent on a mob mentality.

Yes, if these officers are found to have been trigger happy they should be disciplined. I do not feel comfortable with these types of officers on the street. But I am very disturbed by the hatred of police that I see time after time on this site.

It reminds me of how the liberals act when a soldier is accused of shooting a civilian in Afghanistan. Do you really want to follow their example?

** I mean, I can see a pit bull or something**

I own a “pit bull.” My family and I consider him to be a member of our family. I’m so sick of this bias against them. These “cops” do NOT have the right to destroy someones property,(which pets are), regardless of what breed the dog is. This kind of sh*t makes me detest cops!

Now that is a pretty baby!

We have had 3 yellow labs. When our second was 8 mos old she slipped over into my neighbor's yard in the wee hours of the morning to play with -- or I mean, attack and maul -- the two dogs inside the fence. Crazy neighbor gets up, sees the dog inside the fence, gets his rifle. Maggie jumped up on the fence when she saw him (yay! somebody new to play with!) and he shot her right through the chest. He felt threatened because he was on one side of the fence and she was on the other. Some people are insane.
