Of five homicides that occurred in Barstow so far this year, Barstow detectives have solved all but one.
A human head believed to be that of a white or Hispanic girl that was found on Lenwood Road Feb. 9 just west of Tortoise Road has not yet been identified, and her killer is still unknown.
We havent had any promising new leads, said Sgt. Andy Espinoza Sr. They all dried up, there is just nothing there that would give anything to add (to the investigation).
Espinoza said the police department has been in contact with an FBI task force that monitors possible serial killers that travel along the interstates in hopes of finding a suspect.
The head was found by a man looking for cans, and was wrapped in plastic bags bearing the Fiesta Foods and Walgreens names inside a black backpack.
The time of death has been estimated to be within three or four days of the discovery of the victims remains.
The investigation into the case is ongoing and anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Barstow Police Department at (760) 255-5134 or the Barstow Police Department at (760) 255-5111. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the WeTip hotline at (800) 782-7468.

I was stationed at Barstow in the early 70s and there were instances of mafia related body dumpings in old mine shafts etc in the area near Barstow. The desert is a vast area and it is easy to “lose” bodies out there and not have them found for many years.
I'm sure that enough criminals get away with it, but as a desert dweller for many years I know that trips to even remote desert sites aren't as anonymous as some people think.
It's not always the case, of course, but anyone tooling down a remote desert backroad thinking that there isn't a living soul around with eyes on them might be surprised to learn that there's a BLM ranger perched high atop a mountain pass miles away with a 20x spotting scope or night vision watching them, wondering 'Okay, what are these guys up to?' right before they get on a radio with direct access to their network of planes, helicopters, or local citizens in the area.
Desert law enforcement is pretty wise to shenanigans. Some of these guys are like Lawrence of Arabia where not very much goes on in their 500,000 square acre jurisdiction that they don't know about or won't find out about.
Let’s see... Barstow, Ca. A desert area. about 200 miles from Mexican border. In Mexico, the smugglers are warring with each other, and cutting off heads as a warning to other dealers is pretty common these days. I’m gonna take a wild guess that this poor girl was murdered and her head left at that Barstow location as a warning, a “head’s up”, to some other dealer/smuggler.
man...I remember when they were like that
i was in Barstow in 1976...spent the night...July...could not believe how cool and dry it was...I love the desert...makes you feel good
Drug Cartel is moving north I see.......
great picture. looks like you escaped having to mow the lawn :)
I have a very similar picture of me in early 1951 only it was at Biggs AFB in El Paso TX. The scenery looks the same; even the stroller looks the same.
Unfortunately, I vividly remember the landscape of Barstow and the Supply Center. As a 19-22 yo Marine it was “great”, there was a girl behind every tree.
On the bright side, that is where I met and married my wife of 38 years.
