A CHAIN smoking pensioner has celebrated his 100th birthday despite puffing on nearly 300,000 cigarettes and glugging a glass of whisky a day.
Old soldier Arthur Langran - who survived being blown up by a grenade in the Second World War - claims the key to his longevity is doing what everyone tells him not to.
The dad-of-two started smoking aged 20 and has gone through at least TEN-A-DAY ever since. That works out at an incredible 292,000 cigarettes.
As well as being partial to the odd cigar he also sups a dram of Macallan single malt Scotch right before he goes to bed and credits it for his long life.
But his tipple a day over 80 years totals a staggering 900 BOTTLES.
He said: "I always say the secret is doing things you're not told to do. I have been smoking since I was 20 and I still enjoy it - and a pipe."
Arthur, from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, downed pints of ale at his local pub to celebrate the milestone.
His eldest son Peter, 62, revealed doctors had told his father to KEEP smoking despite having gone through 292,000 in total already.
Peter said: "These days he rolls himself five or six a day but used to smoke more and has his pipe once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
"The doctor has said it's not worth getting him to give up the cigarettes."

Don't be irresponsible or self destructive, but realize that when it comes to your outcome you have a lot less control/influence than we think we have.
Those that can't enjoy food are denying themselves one of the most basic pleasures of life. It's like being clean and the feeling after a shower. Why don't we start making people feel guilty about that too, since after all you're polluting the environment. If you like a cigar, smoke it. If you like a steak, have one. It's just if you smoke two - three packs a day or drink three quarter bottle of Walker a day you might be over doing it a bit. It's the excessiveness that's bad. 12 pounds over ideal weight, no big deal; 120 pounds over weight, big deal.
They can have my cigarrette when they pry it from my cold, dead, nicotine-stained fingers! :-)
As I said upthread, I have known many who got cancer and some who died from it.
NONE were smokers.
Of course your response would be that they knew me who is a smoker and that the 2nd hand smoke did them in!
Smoking isnt good for you, but it isnt the black death folks make it out to be.
I wasn’t being serious.
Can I call some friends to play?
Geeze we miss you.
I hope you are back soon. XO
I agree.
Ate right (according to the govt.) exercised (ibid)
probably 60
He probably worked like a complete madman, too. I used to go winter camping quite a bit when I was younger (30+ below) and I’d eat bacon hot and rubbery and soak up the grease with bread - yum! Point is, work load is everything. Some office schlump going to Denny’s and shoveling down the Grand Slam breakfast every morning probably isn’t going to fare too well in the long run. ‘Course, Genetics help, too.
Wow..were we neighbors? Makes ya wonder how we made it! I wish kids today could “live” like we did back then.
I enjoyed your post.
That's how I keep the flu at bay. I keep my blood alcohol level so high that no germs can survive!
The Gov food pyramid is the biggest load of crap ever.
If I ate the way they say too I would be 250lbs
Ahhhhh so your beliefs are defined by the anecdotal examples of people you know? I guess case closed. Or do you give an credence to other evidence?
The Keith Richards Guide to Longevity
I call it empirical evidence.
LOL! You’re so much fun!
Blood transfusions as well as rock and roll help ;)
Run over by a truck at 27.
I think you are onto something there.
