Authorities are investigating the deaths of two dozen cats found inside a woman's South Austin apartment in what investigators describe as one of the city's most horrific animal neglect cases.
Detectives discovered 23 decomposing cats in an unplugged refrigerator in the woman's home, one dead animal in the living area and two others in her car, Sgt. Stephen Fleming said.
Authorities said they are not sure how the cats died but think they may have suffered from a highly contagious respiratory illness.

They said they were investigating the deaths and hadn't charged the 32-year-old woman with a crime. She could not be reached for comment.
Fleming said the woman adopted the cats from the Town Lake Animal Center because she thought they would be destroyed.
Ewwww!
No mo’ cats for you!
I hate these threads. God bless these cats. :-(((((
Hoarder
There are more than a few people in Austin with similar traits.
She had 23 cats! That’s disgusting!
One cat is one cat too many!
{Slipping into flame retardant suit now}
I don’t see what one has to do with the other.... Nice language..
She had a lot more than 23. They found 52 more that were still alive - all in one apartment.
No flames from me bro. In fact, I'll jump into the fox hole next to you and fight.
Tastes like chicken...........
Yeah, keep Austin wierd.
So many causes, so little time.
Sorry about the s-word. Police investigating cat deaths when there is a drug war being fought on our southern border, much of which involves illegals being used as pack mules. That was my point. Our country is being invaded on a daily basis, yet someone thinks that ....oh well, why bother.
