I would trust any of them in an emergency.

They're both rock solid platforms. But when I went shopping for a set up defensive shotguns I had some specific criteria in mind that, for us you understand, were better filled by the Mossbergs.

I have a Remmy 870 which I prefer over the Mossberg but either one is a great choice. For those of you looking to make your Remmy/Mossberg a house gun, consider putting the Surefure forearm light on it.

There are a number of features that make the Mossberg superior to the Remington IMO.
One is the tang placement of the safety switch. It's not necessary to change the position of the shotgun from the firing position to switch it on or off.

For me it has to do a lot with the stock / grip.
Using a standard stock, the Mossy safety is located better, but with a pistol grip you now have to move the trigger hand around to reach it (at least I did).
The Remington (or Winchester) with the safety at the trigger guard is better suited for use with a pistol grip, but not so much if you use the standard stocks.

So I have standard stocks on my M500A, pistol grip on my R870.

I still like my old humpback Browning A-5. Once you shoot a smoothly operating semi-auto, you never really want to go back to a pump.

My favorite hunting shotgun is a Beretta Urika.

I have a Beretta A302 that I haven't shot in 25 years. It's pretty and not worth enough to make me want to get rid of it. Probably has about 75 rounds through it.
