Mossberg 500 is a series of shotguns manufactured by O.F. Mossberg & Sons. The 500 series comprises widely varying models of hammerless, pump action repeaters, all of which share the same basic receiver and action, but differ in bore size, barrel length, choke options, magazine capacity, and "furniture" (stock and forearm) materials

Love the flame on the second shot being about 3-4 feet out from the barrel. The guys I shoot vintage matches with mostly have M1 Garands. I’ve had a few of them, once they’re done with the rapid fire, turn and watch my M38 go boom. The M38 throws a nice little fireball, too.

A guy once asked me if I ever had to “fix Bayonet” on my M-16... I told him if it ever came to that, I would be pulling my .45 instead! ;-)

Agreed. I had both at the same time. The Mossberg was far clunkier and rough handling then my 870. Sold the 500 and still have the 870 now for 30 years.

Love the 870. Bought one about 15 years ago.
Also have a Rem Model 31, the predecessor to the 870.
And a Browning humpback 12 guage.
And an LC Smith side by side 12
And a Rem 1100
And a Rossi .410

You can never have too many shotguns or coolers.

Ah yes, the budget committee of one...how familiar it is. I tell my budget director that a new shiny gun would make a woooonderful Christmas present for the number 1 peon.

Good luck!!

Great! Looks like it could be an “exit” gun as well.

I’m in the market for a home defense shotgun...probably go with the old standard Remington 870...I’m thinking the Youth model in 20 gauge as Mrs. Cuttnhorse could handle it quite well.

I went along similar lines of thinking when I got my Mossberg 500 20 gauge in the youth size. Worked out great. Even with the short barrel, I had a blast (pun intended) using it on a 5 station sporting clays setup at a local range.

Hope I never have to use it for its’ original purchase intent, which was close quarters home defense.

Stopped by the local dealer today. That is what I saw. It’s a newer Chinese version of the Model 97 with a full bayonet. He’s asking $449 for it.

That’s a decent price, with the bayonet.

If your local dealer has a good selection of Chinese shotguns you might look see if he has a Norinco M37 model. Its based on the venerable Ithaca 37. The 37 is about as good a combat shotgun as ever made. Bottom eject was a particularly endearing feature.
From what I've seen, the Norinco M37s were a slight improvement on the original.

Winchester 97 trench gun

That’s some wicked looking bayonet.
Kind of like in “Jaws”, I can’t help but wonder if it was developed by
some combat soldier said “You’re going to need a bigger/longer bayonet”.

Or maybe the idea was to be able to spear two Krauts in tandem.
