First, it was smoking in restaurants and bars. Then, artery-clogging trans fat in fast food joints and bakeries. Now, Boston health regulators have their crosshairs fixed on soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold in city buildings. Concerned about the girth of employees and visitors to government agencies, Boston officials are weighing — gingerly — whether to restrict or even prohibit the sale of calorie-laden refreshments on city-owned property. The city has convened influential health, education, and housing leaders to develop a policy that aims to reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. While discussions are ongoing, Bill Walczak, head of a community health center and a member of the city’s panel, said, “Somebody has to take a stand, and if it isn’t the government and health care institutions leading the way to a healthier lifestyle, who’s going to do it?’’

They can do whatever they want on government property. They want to yank all the soda vending machines out of town hall, police and fire departments? Have at it....
It’s when they intrude on private property and ban products on non-government property - I have an issue.
This health department banned all smoking rooms in hotels in Boston, stripping hotel owners of giving choices to their patrons. They banned smoking on private property loading docks - for goodness sakes. What’s a little sugar syrup between bureaucrats?
What will they do when this changes nothing? Admit failure or ban more stuff?

As a caller to Howie Carr show joked yesterday, frequent consumption of soda can lead to a large carbonated footprint.
And by the way if things like smoking are so bad why doesn’t the government just ban tobacco? Oh right...tax revenues...

Hmmm... Sin taxes... How about a tax on taxes. It has been proven they are economically destructive and by taxing them we would reduce the amount of destruction they cause.
Probably are—a “surtax” or tax on a tax?
MA put a sales tax on booze recently (ballot question to try and repeal). There already was an excise tax so consumers being taxed twice
I think this entire sugar, sweets mess is made funnier by the Obamas because they don't appear in public without sucking on an ice cream cone! ...proving Obamas suck!
Not what I mean. I propose a tax on the collection and implementation of taxes. Those taxed would be those who bring the tax into being -- the members of the legislature. If the total tax burden to the average citizen in their district is 30% then the reps would be taxed at twice that or 60%. If this were in place they would be fighting to lower taxes instead of raising them.
Unfortunately they are the ones that would have to put it in place
