A new book uncovers shocking secret attacks launched on ships bearing Holocaust survivors en route to Israel. Andrew Roberts on the violent lengths to which post-war Britain went to appease oil-rich Arab states.

As Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, the pitiful remnants of History’s greatest crime, tried to make their way across an often hostile Europe at the end of the Second World War, toward at least a semblance of safety in the Holy Land, they had no shortage of problems with which to contend, including disease and malnutrition, Polish anti-Semitism, Soviet indifference, Allied bureaucracy, and Arab nationalism. Now we discover that they faced yet another peril in the shape of bombs planted on their transport ships by Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6.

A new book to be published next week entitled MI6: The History of the Secret Intelligence Service 1909-1949, by the distinguished British historian Keith Jeffery, reveals the existence of Operation Embarrass, a plan to try to prevent Jews getting into Palestine in 1946-'48 using disinformation and propaganda but also explosive devices placed on ships. Nor is this some speculative spy story that can be denied by the authorities: Dr. Jeffrey’s book is actually, in their own words: “Published with the permission of The Secret Intelligence Service and the Controller of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office.”

Being this was peace time after the war I would think a Jewish Refugee Ship blowing up would be a major story of the time... I just am not aware of ever hearing anything of this, accident or otherwise

Actually, since I’m paid by a private foundation, and have publications under my belt, I’m pretty free to say what I want, now. You don’t have to fish for conspiracy clues.

I’m aware of the broad outline of the genocidal globalist treasonous evils . . . and some of the specifics. I’d best let the rest pass by, for now.

My specialty is wartime industrial development and treaty law. (More the former than the latter—treaty law actually is quite boring, but I had to really dig into it when investigating Cash-and-Carry and Lend Lease.)

I said I encountered rumors of the matter of the Jewish refugees and their ships while researching my Master’s. I never said I was looking for same. EVERY professional World War II historian knows the story, and how phony it is. The public is reacquainted with it every few years by sensationalist book writers.

Actually, going back over what I had written, I can see where you’d get the idea I was specifically researching this matter. That misled you, and I apologize for being unclear.

Let’s just say I’ve run across undocumented rumors—and flat-out lies—about British attacks on Jewish ships. They DID fire on a few, though, which refused to obey commands to halt for inspection before entering a closed port. That is legal under international law, if sufficient warning is given first.

Always keep in mind, when the Middle East is concerned, everybody lies like the dickens.

to me tenure meant public school system and you stated that you worked for pivate systems and my question was where does the tenure come in?

Ah, I see where you’re question.

“Tenure” means different things as far as public school teachers and University teachers are concerned.

Tenure for school teachers means someone put in their time, paid for the necessary certificates, and now they have pretty much a job for life. It was originally a means to sweeten the remuneration of teachers of children, because it used to pay very poorly (and still does, in many areas of the country, like Eastern North Carolina, where I come from). At the very least, come Depression or whatever, they always had a job.

Tenure for University teachers originated in the Middle Ages, when “heresy” involved not agreeing with the current biblical doctrine. “Seizing tenure” meant that the teacher in a Medieval University (who was usually a Catholic priest, by the way) could study Aristotle or Plato or whatever without worrying about being the centerpiece of a bonfire. It obviously didn’t always work.

Modern tenure means, I have my PhD, publications, and quite a bit of teaching experience. It means I’ve proven capable of carrying on research projects on my own, and that I’m ready to evaluate candidates for PhD’s in my field (history, in this case).
Legally, it does NOT guarantee me an income or teaching position, but it DOES give me a leg up in promotions and in grant-hunting. And, in case you’re wondering, I’ve NEVER felt obligated to “toe the line” politically in this school, as a student or teacher. One of my earlier prof’s even worked on Reagan’s initial economic development team.

And I won’t tell the name of my school because of internet stalkers. However, a person would have had to spent their life in a cave on the moon not to recognize it.

I’m on my way to a full professorship, which means I can head an academic department or pretty much spend more time researching and less teaching (though I found that I really like teaching—to my surprise). With a few more commercial books under my belt (one published now, and two more to follow within eighteen months), I’ll probably find myself being recruited for other schools. I’ll never leave this one, though. It’s close to home, and its...extremely...prestigious. Competes with Hahvahd and Yale in terms of professional standing.

The book we are discussing is focussing on concrete cases, and there is enough description to know what's on the table here. Not "firing on ships that refuses inspection". We also know that MI6/and other authority has authorized the description.

So basically you were spouting off without having even looked, or spouting off against better knowledge, and using your "historian" credentials for pushing a rather overheated claim that this guy has to be bluffing.

Now, with a very few and disreputable exceptions, historians tend to do their homework a bit better. No sale.
