For first time in months, President Obama attends church publicly

President Obama publicly attended church Sunday morning for the first time in nearly six months, and shortly after a major survey showed that only a third of Americans can correctly identify Obama's faith as Christian.

The first family attended the 9 a.m. service at St. John's Church Lafayette Square, an Episcopal congregation about a block from the White House.

The Obamas - the president, first lady Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha - made the trip on foot.

The family sat a few rows from the altar, among roughly 40 worshippers. Each family member received communion, led by the president.

St. John's rector, the Rev. Luis Leon, preached on the weekly gospel reading, Luke 16:1-13, which ends, "You cannot serve God and wealth," in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

The visit, Obama's first public trip to church since Easter, comes several weeks after a major survey showed that a substantial and growing number of Americans believe that Obama, a self-described Christian, is Muslim

He probably left as soon as he realized the pastor wasn't going to "G_d d_mn America". That was his traditional "Christian" benediction for 20 years, you see, and it just didn't seem like Sunday unless the pastor condemned America. Typical white people wouldn't understand this deep African-Marxist spirituality.

And this Episcopal church served the Lord’s Supper to a Muslim... how nice and tolerant...

Awww...they made the trip on foot. How "pedestrian" of them. How phony photo-op of them.

Focus group suggestions on how to improve image;

1) Resign
2) Shoot Pelosi and Reid
3) Attend church

Damn, I was really hoping for one of the others.

ROFL!

As a matter of fact, I don't think the people are buying it anymore. The elites think this "proves" his Christianity, but I don't think the Christians are buying it.

But, last time I was at an Episcopal service, ca 1968, I was told that as a non-Anglo Catholic Communion member, even though a practicing Christian, I could NOT receive Communion...any more than I could receive Communion at my then girl friend's Catholic Mass.

I was Baptist at the time, and had been invited by a friend, who is now an Episcopal priest.

I think San Fran Nan should check into that pronto. I also wonder if they covered any crosses, etc. like they did at Georgetown. You know he needs to be the center of all the attention and not the Lord.

Things must have changed since you attended in '68.

As long as I have been involved with the Episcopal Church (mine is Anglo-Catholic), it has practiced "open Communion", meaning that ALL baptised Christians may receive the Sacrament.

I was Baptist at the time, and had been invited by a friend, who is now an Episcopal priest.

As a former Lay Eucharistic Minister, I have offered Communion to the Baptist friends and relatives of folks I went to the hospital to visit and take Communion to. More often than not, they accepted it. It's funny how having a loved one in the hospital in serious condition tends to break down our petty, self imposed denominational barriers.

I realized after a short while that I had to start "warning" folks, though. I soon became aware that many were shocked when I served them the Cup... and they realized that it did NOT contain Welch's Grape Juice. LOL.

2 thoughts come to mind.

1) Is this a subtle message following the Pope visiting England?

2) Doesn’t this place our fighting men at risk in Afghanistan, after Obama has made so many repetitive impressions of his Muslim leanings? (at least by the leftist mentality)

Thanks for the information. Moving to open Communion most likely stems from the ecumenicalism of the 1970s.

By then I had moved out of the Bay Area, to an area decidedly Fundamentalist, and my friend had been ordained, and went to Papua.

Currently, our neighbor (we sold them their 20 acres) is the Anglican priest for the local Anglican Mission in America, but has never invited us to services, and avoids discussing religion...but did he bless our animals one year. And, yes, we do socialize; they even share part of our garden area.
