I have satellite internet, which is going to be slower than DSL/Cable, but have experienced a strange phenomenon recently.
If you were to send me a link to a 10MB file to download, I could download it successfully in seconds.
However, I can barely browse web pages, as browsing the web is so slow I can barely use it.
Is this a TCP or DNS problem that can be adjusted?
I have scanned with many types of anti-malware (Malwarebytes) products and anti-virus (Bit Defender, Kaspersky, etc.) and it doesn't appear to be a virus issue.
Any help most appreciated. Thanks!
Are there any updates you need to install?
Which browser are you using?
I keep up to date on all my updates. The latest one’s from MS this past week were all installed. This has been an ongoing issue for months. Had the tech guy out here - I won’t mention the ISP by name - and his suggestion? Go with a different ISP.
But I think something else here is at play. I’ve NEVER in all my years working on computers seen a situation where an individual - in this case, me - can click a link to a 10MB file and have it download successfully in seconds, but when going to browse the web have to wait 60 to 120 seconds for a simple web page to open (if it opens at all).
EDIT: I clicked the “Post” button and two minutes later it’s still trying to get this post to go thru.
Start in SAFE MODE with networking (if you can) and see if it is faster
if it is then some add-on installed in our prowser is the culprit.
OR try disabling all add-ons, from the explorere TOOLS, MANAGE ADD-ONS, and INTERNET OPTION menus
I used them all, but right now the latest version of Firefox (not the beta one).
When I download a sample 10MB file, the sent/received packets in the LAN connection icon in the bottom right corner of my screen chug along like a champ.
But when I try to browse the web, those sent/received packets numbers get stuck and don’t move.
I am an IT professional and one of my clients is a school. One of the administrators got a virus this week that created this exact behavior. Email and network worked but IE8 did not. I installed firefox on the PC and it worked for 1 day & then stopped.
I reloaded the PC, problem solved.
Worth looking at.
Already tried that but thanks. SAFE MODE with networking is just as slow. IE is so slow I can barely ever get a web page to execute in that.
Firefox at least sometimes let me send/receive some packets while browsing the web, but most of the time the whole connection stalls, but only while I’m browsing.
Like I said give me a link to click on which is to a 10MB file and I’ll have it downloaded successfully in seconds.
Delete your Internet cache files.
Make sure you have your proxy settings correct. Either off or pointing to your companies gateway server.
It sounds like it may be your DNS server. Try setting it to automatic ( your ISP may have changed servers since in was installed and had the old DNS listed ). If that doesn't fix it, try using a different server. Here is a link to show you how :
Do that at least three times a day. No dice.
I have sattelite internet (Wild Blue) and have had similar experiences. This is an easy fix that has worked for me. Simply power your sattelite modem down for fifteen seconds and then power it up again. Don’t just disconnect the coax cables. Actually disconnect it from its power source.
Ping.
Obtain DNS automatically is grayed out. Anyway around that? Thanks for your suggestion. Maybe that’s my problem, but need to find out why getting the numbers automatically are grayed out.
Are you using a router or switch in your home hook-up? Maybe you could try resetting that.
Could be a DNS server issue, either from your router/switch or your ISP’s DNS server. Google DNS server.
