Oops, Steve Jobs did it again: Apple's iPad will disrupt PC market by creating new usage model

A recent study by leading market research firm Technology Business Research, Inc. (TBR) finds that the tablet will displace many consumers' secondary PCs, creating a third major device category for personal computing and connectivity. The study points to the success of Apple's iPad as a demonstration that the consumer seeks quick, easy e-mail and Web access via a device that features more portability than a laptop PC while providing instant-on and more usability than a smartphone. Although laptop PCs will lose some ground to tablets, TBR believes the market will support all three device styles for computing and connectivity, including the laptop, tablet and smartphone.

"The rise of tablets is a clear signal of consumers' desire for different forms of information consumption. Tablet devices, such as the iPad, will shake up the personal computing ecosystem and the PC market," said Ezra Gottheil, Senior Analyst at TBR, in the press release. "Tablets will displace sales of consumers' secondary laptop PCs, while their primary PC will continue to maintain its role for tasks such as document creation, storing files, and editing photographs. The majority of consumers will still own a PC two or three years down the road, but they will increasingly leverage other devices for computing and web access needs."

TBR's iPad & Web Tablet Buyer Study surveyed 500 United States-based iPad owners and future buyers, who plan to purchase an iPad in the next six months. Key findings include:

• About a third of buyers replaced or will replace their PC with the iPad.
• Almost half of buyers use their iPad as their primary computing device.
• More than 80% of buyers stated the iPad met or exceeded expectations.

The TBR iPad & Web Tablet Buyer Study report documents the emergence of a third connectivity device in the consumer arsenal. The tablet category will be a vital piece of the computing ecosystem.

"The tablet device will rapidly establish itself as a powerful information consumption device in both the consumer and business markets," said TBR President Jon Lindy in the press release. "All those in the computing ecosystem must keep the tablet in mind when putting together their strategies for 2011 and beyond."

Survey data included:
• Respondent demographics and technology profiles
• Purchase criteria and purchase process
• Device usage and anticipated usage
• Satisfaction and desired improvements
• Attached purchases

Steve Jobs owes me a commission. I’ve sold 2 of them in the last week.
Well, enticed the sale of them to be honest.

Love my iPad. On it as I speak/type.

Hats off to Steve Jobs. He is, as I write this, changing the landscape of an industry most thought terminally stratified. He will be studied in business schools 100 years from now.

I love my iPad, and I’m no techie. I work from home and use either a Dell PC or Dell Laptop for work. My husband’s an IT manager and he bought me the iPad for a present.

I’ve not been an Apple fan. Our son used a Macbook Pro all through college and grad school, and occasionally I’d try to use it but was so used to Windows, I found it hard.

Then I received the iPad...oh my gosh, what fun it is. I will admit although hubby got me all the bells and whistles to do work on it, I only use it for entertainment and information. That would be my one gripe. I often sit in my recliner w/my notebook and work, but balancing the iPad and keyboard on your lap isn’t easy, and although the normal keypad pop up works great if you’re using it for google, or to type in a web address, using it non-stop, having to shift between the number screen and the letter screen is too hard to do for work...thus the need for the external keyboard.

Now my husband’s liking it too. We read on it (ibooks has hundreds of free books), play games on it, get info on it through browsing, watch movies/television shows on it (lots of free movies on Netflix or Hulu...my husband’s watching old episodes of his favorite TV show MI5)...it’s just fun to use and the apps you can get, many for free, are amazing.

The only problem I’ve encountered is that now, when using my Dell laptop to do my work, I find myself tapping the screen quite often and then remembering...oops that doesn’t work on this computer. :)

the usage model was always there. It was a pad with a pen and a photocopy of something to read. Granted simplified but it is good to have the star trek padds finally a reality. (like cell phones, etc.)

The iPad is doomed then? Yep once again, Apple is dead, Jobs should sell the stock and give the shareholders the money, Michael Dell said so.
