Former Rep. Joseph DioGuardi of New York won the Republican nomination to take on Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in November’s election.

With 85 percent of the precincts counted in yesterday’s primary, DioGuardi had 42 percent of the vote, according to the Associated Press. David Malpass, a former Bear Stearns Cos. chief economist, had 38 percent and Bruce Blakeman, a lawyer, had 20 percent.

DioGuardi, 69, represented the northern New York City suburbs in the House from 1985 to 1989. He and Gillibrand, 43, are running to serve the two years remaining in the term won in 2006 by Hillary Clinton, who President Barack Obama named in 2009 to serve as U.S. secretary of state.

DioGuardi also is the nominee of New York’s Conservative Party. His daughter Kara, a singer-songwriter, was a judge on the “American Idol” television show.

Did Palin support either candidate?

As a New Yorker, I was actually for David Malpass as I know that he would be the better candidate.

I guess DioGardi ( with all his past baggage ) is the next best thing. He has the fire and passion to win this, and as a CPA has a very good grasp of the fiscal and debt dangers facing this country.

Let’s hope he unseats Gillibrand ( who is nothing more than a yes-girl for Chuck Schumer ).

She’s been occupying Hillary’s seat for close to 2 years and is still widely unknown in this state.

Hey, maybe the Diogardi name ( as in Kara Diogardi, his daugher of American Idol fame ) will give Joe better name recognition...

Palin was silent on the GOP New York Senate primaries.

David Malpass’ politics were the closest to Palin’s. Unfortunately, he did not win.

YES!!!!

Joe is great. Glad to hear of this win. He'll clean her clock.

Maybe loser Lazio could make a fighting game of it with Schumer intead of nattering on about a third party race for NY Gov.

Hey, with the allegedly "unlikely" O'Donnell nomination win last night, ya never know....

FReegards!

I voted for DioGuardi yesterday. He has the fire and passion to take on the far left.

Joe beat Bella Abzug for his first re-election bid. the second time around they carpet bagged a popular judge into his district to unseat him. the liberals hate him. that should tell us something.

If he beats Gilli, and he definitely can, that changes the entire calculation with the 8/9 and the delaware and all that.

Kara could do a tv commercial. Maybe an American Idol parody. I don’t know, there could be a Gilly saying something and Kara saying a message. “I don’t know, Cap & Trade will destroy the economy, so, I’ll have to say no.” And then her dad and she could say “dad that’s great for New York” or whatever.

I know nothing about Joseph DioGuardi (hey, I live in Arizona), but really admire and respect David Malpass. Read his market commentary for years. He was one of the best.

that isn’t good.

Anytime you’re in favor of reducing co2, and you favored cap and trade, or any other policy that was bad and had something to do with co2, you can always say something like “I believe in Carbon Sequestration through charcoal. Not only does adding charcoal to soil keep carbon from creating carbon dioxide for hundreds of years, it improves the soil, increasing yields so we can feed ourselves (or hungry people around the world). It’s been described to me, and I’m no expert on this, as an excellent alternative to Cap & Trade, in that it will save us from the (fictional) global warming problem, and it won’t destroy the economy like cap & trade would.
