Unfortunately, he also ignored Major League Baseball's Rule 21 (d)
Rule 21 (d) is posted on the clubhouse door in every major league stadium, and has been for years. Rose probably walked by those signs 5,000 times during his career.
Rule 21 (d), which states: d) BETTING ON BALL GAMES. Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year. Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.
It doesn't say... unless you've got 4000 hits or 700 home runs or won 300 games or have 3000 strike outs. It says ANY PLAYER....He chose to ignore the signs, he chose to bet on baseball, and he's being punished in accordance with the rule. He also chose to lie about his actions for 14 years, and even after acknowledging them, still doesn't seem to understand that his mistake wasn't failing to apologize sooner. It's that he bet on baseball in the first place.
Screw him and all the jerks who used HGH and steroids. This is includes Tiger Woods too.
Uh Pete, a “Roast” is supposed to be funny. Thanks for ruining that too.
“Screw him and all the jerks who used HGH and steroids. This is includes Tiger Woods too.”
Amen, brother.
Pete was a great baseball player but otherwise a stain on the game after he retired. He ruined his own legacy which was tragic given the hard nosed way in which he played the game and the level of excellence he maintained for years. His actions in betting on the game AND the lies he spewed for years make him a sad and pathetic loser.
Holy venues, Batman, can't you just taste the irony?
Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame... with his induction the year after he dies. He should never live to see himself put in the hall. That is what a “lifetime ban” should mean, and in my opinion how it should be handled.
Put him in the Hall of Fame with an asterisk next to his name. His stats alone deserve recognition.
You look at guys like Ted Williams, Mantle, Maris and others who did not cheat. Micky had drinking issues but by and large they were good guys. Ted was a WW2 and Korean War fighter pilot who would have beaten Ruth’s home run record if he had not served.
These guys are heroes. There were no juiced balls, bats or players.
Rose has always been a shady guy.
Wasn’t his nickname ‘Mister Hustle’? ... He was hustling the sport, and I don’t mean hurrying.
There’s going to be more people with asterisks in the HOF than clean entries.
Rose was a hell of a baseball player who worked his ass off, hustled and gave it his all. After retiring and becoming a Manager he bet on the game, got caught and rather than man up, he lied. That is the biggest affront of all. Admit that he had a problem, apologize for his failings and maybe people could have had some forgiveness. The charade that he played out for years made him nothing more than a loser.
It’s only baseball folks, get over it ...
To paraphrase that lil’ Oriental girl
“Boo freakin’ hoo”.
Apologize for gambling while at a casino?
Typical Rose for ya.
True. But most of then wouldn’t have the stats to be in the Hall without what caused the asterisk. Pete Rose played hard and earned the stats regardless of his gambling.
“...regardless of his gambling.”
I’d agree with you but for the fact that he LIED about his betting on baseball for two decades!
His time to come clean was 25 years ago.
Note to all sports figures current and not current.
STOP CRYING IN PUBLIC. Do your crying in private. You look like a bunch of silly twits.
Lying about gambling doesn’t change his stats. He earned them. They deserve to be recognized.
I was at that game Saturday night - it was pretty good stuff to see.
Cry me a river. He had it all. He threw it away.
