As I recall, MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle for promoting gambling casinos ... and Denny McLain for illegal bookmaking ... and George Steinbrenner for making illegal campaign contributions.

I'm pretty sure today's moral ambiguity and astronomical cash flows have not improved the quality of baseball. I, for one, yearn for those simpler times. Pete Rose can take another decade or so to think about his sins for all I care. Maybe then, he'll find a more appropriate venue to express his heartfelt contrition.
