I Have A Bone To Pick With Beck
NewsRealBlog ^ | September 12 | Joe Blough

Posted on 09/12/2010 11:24:16 PM PDT by joeblough_freerepublic

I’m a Beck fan. I’m convinced that he is doing America an enormous service. Beyond that, this Beck video clip, linked here at NRB is a must see. Really. Go watch it before you even read this. Excellent stuff.

That said — and I trust you’ve seen the video now … no cheating — during the course of that monologue, speaking of Israel and the Arabs, Beck repeated an error that one frequently hears about matters in the Middle East, and which just frosts my tail.

SNIP

It may be possible that the idea of religious war, of holy war in the sense that we understand it today, may have been introduced to Europe’s conceptual vocabulary by the encounter with the Arabs. That holy war, war specifically for the faith, war for the purpose of spreading an ideology, or its dominance — an idea the 20th century became all too familiar with — may be a uniquely Mohammedan, and Arab, invention, as of 632 AD.

>>Biblically, they all come from the same father.<<

All from the same father? Are you not familiar with the split between Esau and Jacob?

Perhaps this from the Bible will help you get started.

“Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.”—Romans 9:13

Islam is a political system. I’d rather read what you had to say than Joe’s unfocused blog that fails to nail it down like you did.

The Arabs are generally believed to be decedents of Ishmael the son of Hagar who was the handmaiden of Abraham the father. The was before Sarah could conceive.

“Islamic traditions consider Ishmael as the ancestor of Arab people,”

When Sarah conceived Yisack(Issac) then he became the father of the Jewish people.

As far as Jacov and Esau, Esau(the red) split from the Jewish people and became the father of the northern people. That is, northern Europe.

But this, of course, is all just theological conjecture and can be interpreted multiple ways. But, both in Islam and in Judaism is is accepted that both Jews and Arabs came from Abraham but originated by different mothers.

It is funny that even the ‘Satan’ woman came from the same father according to traditional religious theology. So, I guess her father is ‘Satan’ too. LoL

Yours, madam, is an eminently sensible suggestion.

Jewish texts refer to Esau/Edom as Rome and its inheritor, Western Civilization. Ishmael is referenced as Islam. It’s a question of culture and spiritual inclinations rather than DNA.

Probably a reference to John 8:44 “Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.” Popular with Christian Identity-types.

The roots of the Israeli/Jewish and Arab/Muslim go way back to Abraham-Sarha and Abraham-Hagar. Mohammed of Hagar really started the fuss with the acts/teachings of the Koran. He couldn’t deal with Jesus otherwise.

To be fighting over something for 1500 years is quite a long time as well, especially by American standards (about three times as long as it's been since Columbus arrived here).

I suspect the truth is somewhere between your view and the one you criticize. When something new comes in to the world it usually builds on what was already there.

I don’t know what I was thinking when I wrote that. I know that the Arab people are through Ishmael who with his mother Hagar was banished to the desert. I obviously need to think before I type. Thanks for pointing out my error.

My point was to show that there was a separation of ancestry after Abraham with the Arab and Jewish people. The blessing followed through Isaac and Jacob to the Jews and not through Ishmael. I obviously didn’t do it well.

Good catch...but I’m pretty sure that was not her intent.

That was a clear insult. There was no thought behind it. IMO

hehe

I know I have a hard time squelching what I think is a one-liner chuckle at the expense of exactitude, and I assume others have the same problem!

In Judaism the fathers(avot) are Avraham, Yitsack, and Jaacov.

Avraham - the modified name of Avram son of Terach
Yitsack - meaning ‘will laugh’ after Sarah laughed at the thought of giving birth to Issac
Jaacov - meaning to ‘cleave’ as Esau was born first and Jacob held on to his foot and was born with/after him.
Esau - ruddy or red he was said to have been covered with red hair
Sarah - the modified name of Sari
Israel - the name given to Jaacov after wrestling with the angle while waiting the return of Esau

Biblically, whenever some significant interaction with G-D occurred, HE would change your name. Consider it like a promotion.

Except that Jews trace their ancestry through the mother. So, while it’s not DNA, it’s family line.

Sorry, it was a case of not reading the entire post. I am sorry for my error. I did not realize that the statement was about Jews as well.

Oh, that's a relief. You had me going there for a while. I know how you feel, exactly how you feel, as I have planted my size 8 hiking boot in my own mouth for the same reason on more than one occasion. ;-)
