A Maryland couple claims their orchard is now the first to sell hard cider in the state.
The Frederick News-Post reports Patty Power and Robin Miller are first in Maryland to have a license to produce and sell the beverage with 5 percent to 7 percent fermented alcohol content.
The couples Distillery Lane Ciderworks had its grand opening Saturday in Jefferson.
The husband and wife planted the first apple trees on their farm in the spring of 2001. Now, they have more than 2,000 trees.

Le Farm de Boone.
Cool story. Nice to see a Maryland story that doesn’t involve a shooting, wasteful government spending, general liberal idiocy regarding the “topic du jour” (global warming, transgendered rights, etc.), or political corruption.
I've been drinking hard cider for years.
I know the difference between cider and hard cider is adding yeast and fermenting.
However, what is the difference between cider and apple juice ?
“If it’s clear and yella, you’ve got juice there, fella! If it’s tangy and brown, you’re in cider town!” - Ned Flanders ;-)
I drink Strongbow Hard Cider from England, it is a regular guy- pub- on tap- cider there, but I get it over here.

A few bucks?
Apple Cider vs. Apple Juice
Apple cider is essentially apple juice that has not undergone a filtration process that removes coarse pulp or sediment. Cider may or may not be heat pasteurized. Apple juice has been filtrated, pasteurized, and vacuum sealed to give a longer lasting, clearer looking product. Most juices add additional water and other ingredients to maintain flavor and clarity. Outside the U.S., the term “Apple Cider” typically means “Hard Cider” while “Apple Juice” usually will get you a sweet cider.
Hard Cider vs. Sweet Cider
When you press apples into a liquid form for immediate bottling and consumption you get Sweet Cider. This cider may or may not be pasteurized. Allowing the liquid to ferment, either naturally or with controlled active ingredients like yeasts, one gets Hard
I'll have to check that out.
How about vinegar ?
Fantastic. They’ll get some business from me. Hard cider is wonderful.
The only cider I knew existed when I was a kid was hard cider. I was amazed that they made “apple cider” without booze in it.
Hard cider can be purchased in NM. But some of it requires paying taxes to the crowngooberment.

Tried them, didn’t like Scrumpy Jack but my scottish s-i-l does.
I haven’t seen these two. I had to lobby my local QFC a Kroger store to stock it.
A dear little old lady I knew used to give me a pint of
apple jack that she made every year. I don’t know what the
process was but it was a kind of apple brandy that was tart
and wonderfully flavored. Recipe died with her. Damn!
I like Blackthorn better, but with a name like that, it deserves a drink once in a while.
