I forgot to mention. Having a flying lifespan of 87 hours is a pretty scary prospect. I have to imagine that the stress on these pilots was almost untenable. That’s one of those intangibles I meant. There was a statistic out there during the war that the average lifespan of a B-24 nose gunner if engaged with German fighters was 90 seconds. My grandfather, who did that job, never said much about his experience during the war, but he was quick to note just how fortunate he was to have survived all those missions over Europe.
