Talk show host and maven of all things domestic Martha Stewart has spotted an opportunity. According to The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes, Stewart wants to take on interview icons Larry King and Barbara Walters:
"My favorite interviewers are Larry King [and] Barbara Walters, both of whom are kind of retiring," Stewart said in a conference call Wednesday... "Who's going to take their place as the serious, great interviewer? I'm throwing my name in there," Martha told reporters on a call to talk about the return of "The Martha Stewart Show," which premieres Sept. 13 on the Hallmark Channel.
Of course, Walters isn't going anywhere, with her return to The View slated for later this month. And while King is losing his nightly show, he will still be appearing on CNN specials.
If the rest of her conference call with reporters is any indication, Stewart may need to bone up on her politics as well. She referred to President Obama's Oval Office address Tuesday as the "State of the Union speech."
Martha Stewart Wants to be the Next Barbara Walters

Has Martha lost her mind?
Why would anyone want to be a senile old hag with a lisp.
(No, I DON’T mean Barney Frank)
Martha is corrupt and elitist enough for the position!
I am betting Otis Winfrey will take Bab’s role when her show ends next spring (as if the world need a role like that for filling).
Well quick then, grab some Viagra and go see Castro!
Tuesday’s ‘State of the Union speech’?
It amazes me that successful female executives—like Whitman, Fiorina and Stewart—emerge without a firmer grasp on politics. While clearly they are capable of getting up to speed, as Whitman and Fiorina have recently done, it’s as if there executive minds so have to juggle, what, all the female dress code stuff or whatever, that the political savvy you expect automatically from their male counterparts just can’t fit in until they turn their full attention to it.
Wait. In what weird universe is that fluffer Barbara Walters a “serious, great interviewer”?
Martha has lost her mind. That is the first step to reaching senility. She is getting older and a bit more haggard (notice I did not write “haggish”) and more found of haggis on Burns’ birthday. But I don’t think she can pull off the lisp unless she loses all her teeth and gets ill-fitting dentures.
Hmmmm, going from a former prison con to a lefty con artist, Yeah, that just might work. Go for it #55170-054.
I think Martha Stewart is a hottie. Not a Helen Thomas hottie, but more of a Sandra Bernhardt hottie.
I could love Martha’s investment account.
Her face not so much........
I remember a couple years back (early 2007?), after she got out of the calaboose, Martha devoted an entire episode of her TV show to “BYOB.”
That’s “Bring Your Own Bulldog.” The studio audience must have brought about 70 English and French bullies.
Martha’s guests included Handsome Dan, Yale’s bulldog mascot, along with a spectacular performance from Tyson the skateboarding bulldog from California. Tyson’s owner swears the dog picked up the skateboard and taught himself.
So much for the image of bulldogs as dumb couch potatoes.
I’ve never been much of a Martha Stewart fan. But after that show, I swear I could forgive her anything. Especially that little business about lying to a fed. In today’s political climate, that’s almost like an act of patriotism.
