At 9 a.m. Monday, police responded to a 911 call of a car burning on Bard Drive North and found a 1998 Honda Civic fully engulfed in flames.

The 19-year-old driver, from nearby Rocky Hill, told police she had been smoking a cigarette moments before the fire and tried throw it out the window. I suppose old butts are gross and pile up.

So you empty it out. I remember doing this when I was a child and my parents were smokers. Part of cleaning the car (for $2 a week, or something like that) was emptying the ashtrays.

It sucks for her, but as a biker, I find this absolutely funny. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dodged cigarettes carelessly flicked out of cars that I’m behind. I had a co-worker that also rides tell me that he was behind a car once where they threw a butt out.. it bounced off the road and right into his crotch. Luckily, he was paying attention and grabbed it before he got burnt. He was kind enough to move into the left lane at the next stop light and return the butt to the owner.. in the same fashion he received it.

The picture is not of this incident, but of a randomly-selected car fire from 2008.

Once you wreck a car by smoking in it, you may as well torch it. I’m not a big fan of anti smoking laws, but it’s amazing that people used to be allowed to smoke on planes.

That’s not a Honda Civic in the picture.

After reading caption on photo...

Why would they included a two year old picture in the story of a different car?

Carpet and upholstery doesn’t burn very well, it is designed to go out. What kind of junk was in the car to catch fire.

Someone I know tossed a cigarette out and it bounced of the hood of a California Highway Patrol car. I still laugh when I think about it. She didn’t see him coming up beside her. He pulled her over immediatly. The fine was between 300 to 400 dollars as I recall.

Note what the heat did to the vinyl siding on the garage....

Good thing butts only take about 1000 years to degrade

As a smoker, I have wondered about the "lifespan" of a butt. I've seen estimates from 18 months to 10 years. At any rate, degradability is irrelevant to the litter issue. Littering sucks, but it's primarily an aesthetic concern. Although certain environmental factors could influence it, degradability wouldn't vary from the street curb to the trash bin.

Full disclosure: I never (anymore) toss butts from my car, I use an ashtray. I do, however, extinguish butts on sidewalks, etc. when I am outside, and unless a trash receptacle is nearby, I will leave them there.

I’ve often wondered why smokers can’t use their car’s ashtray.

And stink it up?!? ARE YOU CRAZY? That would reduce the resale value! /sarc>
