Good thing butts only take about 1000 years to degrade

As a smoker, I have wondered about the "lifespan" of a butt. I've seen estimates from 18 months to 10 years. At any rate, degradability is irrelevant to the litter issue. Littering sucks, but it's primarily an aesthetic concern. Although certain environmental factors could influence it, degradability wouldn't vary from the street curb to the trash bin.

Full disclosure: I never (anymore) toss butts from my car, I use an ashtray. I do, however, extinguish butts on sidewalks, etc. when I am outside, and unless a trash receptacle is nearby, I will leave them there.

Nice, and when I finish my soda or sandwich I just toss the can or wrapper onto the ground.(/sarcasm)

Makes as much sense as your actions.

Field stripping is used on military bases for dealing with cig. butts.

Civilians can do that, too.
