e has been pictured fighting fires, shooting whales with a crossbow and piloting a fire fighting plane

His latest endeavour is a slight departure from his usual macho pursuits.

The Russian Prime Minister is undertaking a 1,300-mile road trip across Russia's far east in a humble Lada.

His journey is designed to showcase the completion of the country's first ever continuous east to west road.

Dressed in a casual polo shirt and wearing sunglasses, Mr Putin said he was keen to test the new road which he hailed as a "historic" moment in Russia's history. "Our country, the largest in the world, has never in its history – never – been completely joined up by highways. Finally we have done it," he said.

Mr Putin repeatedly praised the quality of the Lada car he was driving, giving valuable free publicity to the car's struggling Russian manufacturer Avtovaz. However, he admitted he would not be personally driving the vehicle for the entire journey and would sometimes travel in his convoy of expensive foreign-made Jeeps.

So, why is Putin suddenly trying to look like a larger-than-life hero of the people? What’s his game?

So this is a Potemkin highway? And why do it at all if you admit you're going to fake it?

I have driven more than 1300 mile trips in the USA starting in 1961.

Several for more than 2000 miles.

There’s something about Putin that rocks. I can’t put my finger on it.

I love the way Putin always holds in his stomach whenever he poses for a photograph - he’s totally fooling everyone.

I don't think it means a *Jeep* as a *made-in-the-USA.*

He took a lot of heat for the Lada, with a German-made engine produced by Opel, he purchased in January. All the while he was promoting the Lada as a car that everyone could buy. Meh.

Yeah that did strike me as odd.

Perhaps Obama should drive a Chevy Volt across the US. Of course he would have to stop every 40 miles to recharge or have one heck of a long extension cord.

He’s afraid of Sarah;)

He’s been trying to catch up ever since Dubyah landed the jet on the aircraft carrier - then we had Sarah field-dressing a moose.

What’s a fellah to do????

I don’t think Bush actually landed the plane on the carrier. He was a passenger.

He needs to be the one to claim that *he* finished the road. Not exactly a US-ALCAN highway project. ;)

M58 highway

Wiki: The most problematic stretch of the highway lies between Chita and Khabarovsk. The first section of this route, linking Belogorsk to Blagoveshchensk (124 km in length), was constructed by gulag inmates as early as 1949. Extended and updated between 1998 and 2001, this road forms part of the Asian route AH31 connecting Belogorsk to Dalian in China.

The section of the Chita-Khabarovsk road known as the Zilov Gap remained largely unfinished up until early 2004, when Russian President Vladimir Putin symbolically opened the Amur Highway, with great swaths of forest separating major portions from one another.
