Bill would give OK to 'Ne-VAH-da' pronunciation (proposed by a Democrat assembly man!)

You know the old adage: You say to-MATE-o, I say to-MAHT-o. You say Ne-VAH-da, I punch you in the face. That may sound extreme, but many Nevadans get irritated by the mispronunciation of the state's name.

However, outgoing Assemblyman Harry Mortenson is proposing more tolerance. The Las Vegas Democrat is working on a resolution for the 2011 legislative session to make the "Ne-VAH-da" pronunciation equally acceptable.

Cool...and we can now change Mississippi to Mis’sippi...that’s how everyone down here pronounces it anyway.

First M come, then I come, then S come and come again, then I come and P, and P again, then I come....well you get the idea....old joke.

The first thing I learned when I moved to the West coast was it was Nev add a, and Or-gun (Not Oh Reh Gone. Lest one sound like a fool. I’ve never been able to hang with Warshington, though.

Detroit is generally pronounced “dee TROIT”, but the Ebonics pronunciation of “DEE troit” is taking hold locally there.

They took a recent poll about the pronunciation of Missouri, and it seems as though Missouruh is falling out of favor. Missouree is gaining momentum.

Then again, they may have taken the poll in the big cities and not the rural areas. I’ve also heard it pronounced Missoureh. I’ve never heard anyone say it like Misery, unless it’s a KU or Illinois fan talking smack. ;)

As someone who has lived in Nevada (and moved away), it is an issue. Don’t question that it is an issue, especially in northern Nevada. It is one of those things like “fire burns, water is wet.” That’s the way it is, and trying to get into a discussion about “why?” is simply pointless. That’s just the way things are.

People get pissed when someone pronounces is “Nuh-vahhh-dahh” and they’ll be nice *once* and only *once* to correct the person that it is ‘Ne-vaa-da.’

After that, people get cranky.

The other thing that marks rubes from outside the state is how they pronounce “Ely,” the name of a town on the east side of the state. Hint: the clowns on CSI get that wrong too. Then again, they’re Hollywood morons who have never actually been in Ne-vaa-da.

Or-gun (Not Oh Reh Gone.

Native Californian here. You got it almost right. It's Ore-re-gun, or Ore-re-genn. Either way is correct California pronunciation.

The Nev-AH-duh thing just reeks of political correctness, though, doesn't it? Sounds like Obama's "Pah-kee-stahn".

Talking heads have picked up on Zero's example, and are now "correcting" their pronunciation of all sorts of words. They're such sycophants, it makes me ill to listen to them.
