Gay marriage is a hot issue right now, but it's not as titillating as another battle for equality: the right for women to go topless in public.
That right is a fundamental one, according to the folks behind Go Topless, an organization dedicated to the belief that in order for America to be a truly equal society, women should be able to bare their breasts without fear of being arrested.
Go Topless has been around since 2007, and its big push is Go Topless Day, an annual event held on the Sunday closest to Aug. 26, which is Women's Equality Day, the anniversary of the day women were given the right to vote.
Women in nine U.S. cities -- Seattle, New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Denver, Honolulu, San Francisco and Austin, Texas -- will gather in public spots on Aug. 22 to put the hot-button issue front and center by wearing little more than strategically placed stickers.
In addition, male supporters of the cause will show their support by wearing bras and bikinis.
"It's a matter of fairness," Go Topless director Nadine Gary said. "We want equal topless rights for all or none."
Gary believes that the right for women to go topless should be guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. "The Supreme Court won't stop us," she added
Although other countries, such as Gary's country of origin, France, tolerate topless women, she wants it to be in the legal books so there is no wiggle room.
"Some states, like New York, are supposedly 'top-free,' but in 2005 Phoenix Feeley was arrested for going topless," Gary said. "She later won $29,000 for wrongful arrest."

Hot girls should be able to go topless. A government agency that rates the girls on their hotness. Doesn’t have to be the government. Licenced hotness judges can do the examination and are qualified to provide the “topless card”. Similar to the way it works currently with medical marijuana. If a girl is topless and the cop thinks the girl might be committing a crime of being topless, he’d ask her to see her “topless card” which she would have if she filled out the paperwork and was hot enough. They don’t give a licence to drive to just anyone, you have to be able to drive. They shouldn’t give a topless licence to anyone, just those we want to look at.
Dude - if there is a govt agency for hotness then I want to be the “Hotness Czar.” LOL!.
“Gary believes that the right for women to go topless should be guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.”
And here we’ve been worrying about little things like whether we have a Constitutionally-eligible occupant of the Oval Office.
I never understood people, especially men, that get upset about women breast feeding in public. My only complaint is that the kid has his head in the way.
That would be a popular job. I, too, would want that job.
The hotness czar might make the guidelines for the licensors in the field. The hotness czar could develop a test. Perhaps he could get a bunch of pictures and a scale of 1-10 on each of the pictures. His scoring would be the “score”. And then each applicant for licensing would take the same test. The applicant would get a licence to perform hotness tests, to give out hotness cards if his score is sufficiently close to the score set by the hotness czar. I also would try to be a licenced hotness tester, at least I would take the test, provided the application costs weren’t too high.
I remember when you actually had to work at getting a lady to go topless, now they are touting going topless as the way to go.
In some respects, life is getting easier / sarc
reallly...haha...only in venice beach where the freaks are...
No this is not a good idea lol. Breasts are a “private” part of the body imo. They are for sexual/reproductive purposes. I guess if it becomes ok then men should be able to expose their private part which is used for sexual/reprodutive purposes. Walk around with their penises hanging out eh. People are weird! These exhibitionists have NO reason for wanting to strut their stuff other than the fact they are perverts imo. I mean come on, you can wear something as small as a bikini top and be fine so they cannot say they want to go topless “because it’s cooler!”
Who cares? Let them go topless.
In a couple of weeks most of them won’t even get the attention they seek as people get used to seeing it.
The few really good looking ones will attract unwanted attention and the others will get mad because they get laughed at.
It’s a fad, if they win they lose.
“Breasts are a private part of the body imo. They are for sexual/reproductive purposes.”
They may be private but they are not required for ‘sexual/reproductive’ purposes.
Well, duh!
I’m just taking a stab at this but I’m bett’n they voted for the One.

Lots and lots of equipment malfunctions out there.
But nipple caps? Some nice female breasts with ugly nipple caps?
Not equality yet.
I'll bet that 95% of the ones going topless in Austin are the aged hippies you do NOT want to see topless. Their 38 D cups from their younger years are now 40 extra long.
Believe me, I don’t want anyone but my husband to see me topless.
At my age, even I don’t even like to see myself topless.
FEED ME!
You understand the point. They are attention whores. Their sole purpose is to disrupt traditional values.
Many years ago, in my area a group called the Top Free Seven caused all kinds of noise about fighting for the right of women to go topless. They won the “right” of women to go topless. A few bold women flashed their boobs for a week. Then just as fast as the controversy started, it faded into a big ho hum who cares. What the Top Free 7 failed to understand is that normal everyday women have enough class and moral character to not parade around topless. I suspect that except for a few pockets, the entire country will act the same.
Men and women are the same. Didn’t you know that?
