Pit bull attacks and kills pit bull

BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) –A pit bull broke free of its chains and attacked and killed another pit bull in a Bainbridge neighborhood Tuesday.

Police are now looking for the attacking dog's owners.

But they say it's difficult because many people own illegally tethered dogs in that area.

Some people told us they worry the next time a dog breaks free, it'll go after a person.

Tuesday afternoon, police say a pit bull broke free of its chains and ended up behind this house on Columbia Street in Bainbridge, looking for a fight.

"A dog attacking another dog? It's frightening to tell you the truth," admits concerned neighbor Deborah Anthony.

"Well, I knew we had dogs in the neighborhood but I've never heard of them getting out and hurting somebody," says another neighbor, Euzema Anderson.

Authorities say the fight wasn't a fair match up between the two pit bulls.

The chained dog had about twenty pounds on it's attacker, but because it was tethered and had its teeth filed down, the smaller pit bull had an overwhelming advantage. It went straight for its victim's throat and was still attacking when animal control arrived.

Their only option was to calm down the dog.

Officials say dogs like these that have been constantly tethered end up being more aggressive than others. And if it weren't for those chains, they would attack a stranger like me for entering their territory.

"I think a lot of times we give all those dogs a bad rep depending on how they're raised," Anderson believes. "With a lot of them being in confined spaces, they can have quite a temper sometimes than the ones walking around in a bigger yard."

Now people living in this neighborhood fear another attack, possibly on a human next time.

"It is worse now knowing they could break loose," says Anthony.

The dog's owners will have to pay a fine within ten days or it will be put down, an ending some people don't want for the dog.

"I think if it had attacked someone or harmed a child, then naturally yes, it's probably a good thing to do it so it doesn't do it again," explains Anderson.

In the meantime, they hope these chains are as strong as they look.

Once investigators determine who owns the attacking dog, they'll issue citations.

Authorities say several dog owners in the area, including the owner of the dog that died, may be cited for violating the new city tethering ordinance passed just two weeks ago

One of my very good friends is parent to the sweetest adult female pit bull (Lucy) that I have ever met, and she has the nicest disposition of any dog I know of. She always greets me with licks and I think she considers my moustache better than Mom’s was...

It’s unfortunate that so many of the breed give the rest such a horrible reputation and bad name. I believe it’s likely either the dog was taught to be vicious, or the owners likely failed to teach him not to be vicious. I also believe that you can reinforce many traits in dogs by breeding, and that many people adopt pit bulls only to find out that when they mature, the dog has a strong aggressive streak that frequently results in tragedy.

when so many other doggys can be kept/loved as pets.....why these pit bull jobs? damn, I do not see it unless the owners are caught up in this....”my dog is tougher than your dog”......thus “I am tougher than you”. I love dogs......I’m a very, very old timer and I just do not get this pitbull deal. one of my neighbor’s 8 year olds was mutilated by a pit bull........after the dog exhibited NO aggressive nature towards her for 6 plus years. ‘nurtured’ her, ‘defended’ her, ‘licked and loved’ her.......and one day sitting and watching TV together liked they had for years.......the dog ‘snapped’....clamped down on her face/head and ripped it apart. both of the parents were ‘professional’ type people. long time doggy owners. good people. the people here on FR that blame the owners..........well, sometimes great animal owners......but DAMN.......these pit bull things seem like it is just a matter of not when, but if. with so many other breeds out there.....why an aggressive type thing like a pitbull??? ego? I’m tougher than you? etc....etc. okay FReepers..........help this old timer out on why in God’s name would anyone want one of these ‘dogs of the muslim world.!!!! fire away........this old timer is up for it!!!!!

I’ll go one further. Why would any sane person want any terrier? All terriers are useless animals but for one specific purpose...TO KILL KILL KILL. They are all bred to possess an enhanced killer instinct. They enjoy killing. It is an addiction to them. They are not team players, they don’t get along with other dogs very well, they don’t obey humans very well. I’m not even sure they’re dogs. I think they’re some kind of wolverine-ferret-hyena frankenstein creature.

Look at yourselves. A tethered dog with his teeth filed down, essentially helpless, was killed by another dog, and you people are celebrating like you just had your first orgasm, simply because of the breed of the dog that was killed. Had the tethered dog been a labrador or a collie, you'd be voicing your (faux) outrage.

You truly are a sick lot.

well , you raise a few good points.....but I still feel horribly for my friends kidlet mutilated by a pitbull. a dog, a dog who ‘snapped’..........a dog who NEVER acted anything ever than anything but the best friend to the child. great folks...great parents....great pet owners, great everything but darn...the dog just went off.....for no reason that has been ever determined. these animals go ‘off’ much more than other breeds. why risk it? ego? my doggy is tougher than your’s....thus I’m tougher than you....Really.....I’m not sure. Ideas FReepers???

Any breed of dog can be a problem. I, as a 10 year old kid, was attacked by the next door neighbor's German Shepherd. I still bear the scars 44 years later. I happen to think German Shepherds are an intelligent and protective dog to own. At the moment I am in possession of my third pit bull. Every one of them have been wonderful, loving and loyal companions. They are so eager to please is the reason I will defend them against the naysayers such as yourself. Pit bull dogs are not for everyone. As a responsible owner of a responsible dog, please put the responsibility where it should be... the BAD owners. That's all I ask.

BTW...I could(If I wanted to) train a Jack Russell to tear you a new one. Food for thought.

There seems to be a trend there,,,

Many of these threads report this,,,

“He's a Good boy and never did this before.”,,,

I had the painters out here a few weeks ago and the pits

started throwing themselves against the fence,,,

One of the painters asked me if it was OK for him to carry

his 9mm on my property,,,

They went to lunch and brought back 4 gal. of ammonia,,,

Dawgs stayed away from the fence...;0)

Next time your local news has a report along the lines of...”if you’ve seen such and such a car, call the anonymous hotline...or if you’ve seen a person matching this description, call the anonymous hotline” Call the anonymous hotline and say you MAY HAVE seen the car/person at your neighbors house. There will be a swat team there in 30 minutes breaking down the door and any illegal activities will be found out. Funny thing about the law in that situation, they don’t need a search warrant when someone calls those anonymous hotlines.

Yes, good news indeed! Now if only they’d all do that, leaving only one to shoot.
