Obese visit GP more often than smokers, researchers say (Netherlands)

Overweight people are more likely to make frequent trips to their GP than smokers or those who are generally unfit, say Dutch researchers.

The findings cannot be explained by overweight people having a higher risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, the analysis showed.

Rising rates of obesity means nurses may have to take some of the pressure off doctors, they said.

The research is published in Family Practice.

The team from Maastricht University looked at GP data from almost 4,500 adults.

Participants also filled in a questionnaire designed to find out about their lifestyles, such as their diet, whether they smoked, how much they drank and how much exercise they did.

They expected to find that the most unhealthy or unfit people would visit their GP more often.

But of the lifestyle factors looked at, only body mass index (BMI) was independently associated with frequent visits to the doctor.

Of course, they do.

Their side effects come on much, much, much sooner.

Obesity is now the target.

The cure for obesity is very easy:

Eat Less
Do More

I now hope that everyone realizes what being a “target” is like.

There are all sorts of things not said in this that could matter.

First of all, younger people are far less prone to having reasons to visit their GP. As a group they weigh less. But there was no mention of the relative ages in the study.

Second, the human body is designed to put on and retain weight, to be less susceptible to starvation. Therefore being somewhat overweight as you get older is normal. If you are of normal weight, or underweight, it may be indicative of serious health problems.

Third, the diseases experienced by the obese are generally chronic, compared to those who are underweight, who tend towards acute and deadly problems.

However, those who have acute diseases and die cost far less to a health care system than those who need to care for their diseases for years.

Epic basic medical comprehension fail, GOP_Lady.

Like the girbilist who wrote this intellectually vacuous screed, you failed to spot the basic logic error within the study methodology. Okay, I admit the girbilist may have spotted it, but ignored it to push an agenda.

The obesity itself is often a side effect - not a causal factor

Many medical problems - including quite a few that used yo be fatal reduce or eliminate the ability to exercise. some may cause water retention. The study makes zero attempt to remove individuals who have - for instance - suffered a stroke, or are having certain types of heart problems.

Many medications also have water retention or weight gain as a side effect.

In the good old nineteenth century days, these people conveniently tended to die.

Let's all empathize with the leftists pumping this agenda and agree that obesity is a sign of someone who needs the government to step in and dictate the course of their lives. Not

What this comes down to is reducing medical costs.

Really? Because I have seen studies that say overweight (over what weight?) and obese people are no more likely to lose days at work or visit the doctor more often than anyone else. Most studies say what the person funding the study wants them to say.

And how about homosexuals? Do they not have far more illness than heterosexuals? Or smokers? Or the disabled? Or the elderly? ... and I could go on and on. This attack on fat people has become almost like a witch hunt. Perhaps they will start burning fat folks at the stake.

I avoid the Dr at all costs when I puff up a little. Don’t like the weigh in.

I see obese young people riding buggies with loads of junk food at Walmart and the older thinner shoppers are walking and have fruits and veggies!.
