House Minority Leader John Boehner on Sunday said he's open to talks on changing the U.S. Constitution -- or at least the way it's interpreted -- so that U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants are not automatically U.S. citizens.
"I think it's worth considering," Boehner said.
The top House Republican joined Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in calling for further study of the idea -- something that has been endorsed by prominent Republicans over the past few weeks. Though the call is already running into stiff opposition and faces extremely long odds of ever succeeding, some lawmakers say it would be a way to minimize the incentive for illegal immigration.
"There is a problem. To provide an incentive for illegal immigrants to come here so that their children can be U.S. citizens does, in fact, draw more people to our country," Boehner said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "I do think that it's time for us to secure our borders and enforce the law and allow this conversation about the 14th Amendment to continue."
He continued: "In certain parts of our country, clearly our schools, our hospitals are being overrun by illegal immigrants -- a lot of whom came here just so their children could become U.S. citizens."

Thank you Boehner. Don’t let us down on this one.
I’m less worried about the predominantly Christian Mexicans dropping anchor babies here - you should check out size of the Muslim families breaking the European countries’ welfare systems. I have no doubt that they are already doing this in Dearbornistan Michigan which is why it is truly crucial to end the insane birthright citizenship lottery.
Yeah. Once they can no longer give birth to automatic citizens, they’ll stay and build their own country.
I pretty much agree with you. “Worth considering” is a meaningless phrase designed to get a few free points during election season.
Agreed.
Talk is cheap.
So some wonder why Mark Levin calls them Repubics. Boehner was given four chances to state the truth of tax cuts and recipts to the federal treasury and wiffed on all four counts. Then this RINO progressive tries this stunt.
Levin laid it out in clear and very understandable language how so-called anchor babies is specifically forbidden in the Constitution under the 14th Ammendment as it stands.
Clearly another Progressive Light (R) attempt to screw the public again.
Well then, you can FULLY agree after reading this analysis of the case law on the topic. "Birthright Citizenship": A Fraud on the Constitution.
Mexico has done nothing for its’ people from the beginning of time. We showed have owned it 100 years ago.
I’d say it’s worth a lot more than mere “consideration.”
Wow...really going out on a limb there, Johnny Boy?
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I have been publishing work here on that topic long before Levin began talking about it. here, here, and here.
It is not worth "considering" it is imperative it gets done!
Happened to turn on the TV in time to hear the exchange on this with Gregory, and I was practically screaming at the TV for Boehner to invoke, not the Reagan cuts, but the KENNEDY tax rate cuts, to shut Gregory (and most Demon-rats) pie holes on the subject. But that idiot Boehner danced around the answer and gave Gregory major cred on his dumb-ass question.
Man, I am really seeing the right snatching defeat from the jaws of victory on November 2. If that happens, we can ALL bend over and kiss our liberty (and money) goodbye!
Boehner needs to take the “eh” out of his last name.
Nah, the guy's impotent! :)
Kudos to you but I did not imply he was the first. He just has a much bigger megaphone and the message got out on a national scale.
