Whats a Snooki?
Snooki is an individual featured on the MTV show “Jersey Shore”. Summer visitors to our area, particularly those from Northern New Jersey and New York, are loosely referred to as “Bennies”. There is some discussion as to the origin of the term (which I probably first heard at maybe 3 or 4 years of age), but many say that it refers to “our benefactors” as summer tourism has been an important part of the Jersey Shore economy.
Snooki belongs to the subset of Bennies known as “Guidos”. They are primarily of Italian heritage, though the attitude and behavior rather than the parentage defines them best.
There are other subsets as well, like the B I Cs (Bronx Irish Catholics) and the PennyBennies (from Pennsylvania), but they draw less attention to themselves as groups. Of course, there are also the Clamdiggers (those of us born and raised at the Shore), but we ain’t gettin’ into them!

Heard each one is now being paid 100K per show. Thus, now its they just purposely act stupid when the cameras are rolling to keep the paychecks coming in. As most of all of these pre-scripted “reality shows” are.
I remember when they were filming the Real world in Hawaii, when the cast would show up at bars, anyone they were supposed to interact with (mostly cheap hired actors or locals looking for anyway to get on tv) had to sign non-disclosure agreemments that they wouldn’t go public that the shows were scripted and directors were simply ordering the cast members what to do.

My great-aunt owned a house in Ocean City. I’ve been to the Shore quite a few times! The relatives (Philadelphia Irish Protestants) still own property up there. They had a big reunion when my daughter graduated from Coast Guard boot camp last August. I was home with a new baby and missed it.

What’s a snooki? I don’t know either, but it seems to bother people at the beach and it’s not so pretty.

No offense, but that made no sense what so ever. When you said MTV, that pretty much summed it up.

The term bennies as been around for as long as I can recall. I grew up going to the Bye Bye Bennie parties. There was always a huge one on Labor Day on RT 35 in Bayhead & we would watch the bennies leaving the shore. Bennies back then wore sandals with black socks & funny looking shorts. Their wives had beehive hairdo's & talked funny. There children were rude on the beach & would wreck our sandcastles. They thought they owned the beach/boardwalk & we year rounder's were there to serve them. I don't know how the name came about as I grew up hearing different stories.
