The Worst Movie Year Ever?
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 30, 2010 | Joe Queenan

Posted on 07/30/2010 11:17:42 AM PDT by inflorida

In the new movie "Inception," Leonardo DiCaprio burrows deep into the subconscious of a self-absorbed plutocrat to plant a powerful idea that will change the world. If the technology used in "Inception" were available in real life, Mr. DiCaprio might burrow into the subconscious of Hollywood plutocrats and plant these paradigm-altering ideas: Stop making movies like "Grown Ups," "Sex and the City 2," "Prince of Persia" and anything that positions Jennifer Aniston or John C. Reilly at the top of the marquee. Stop trying to pass off Shia LaBeouf—who looks a bit like the young George W. Bush—as the second coming of Tom Cruise. Stop casting Gerard Butler in roles where he is called upon to emote. And if "Legion" and "Edge of Darkness" and "The Back-up Plan" and "Hot Tub Time Machine" are the best you can do, stop making movies, period. Humanity will thank you for it.

In a millennium that has thus far produced precious few motion pictures in the same class as "The Godfather," "Jurassic Park," "Casablanca," "Gone with the Wind," "My Fair Lady" and "The Matrix," there is a knee-jerk tendency to throw up one's hands and moan that the current year is the worst in the history of motion pictures. But 2010 very possibly is the worst year in the history of motion pictures. Where once there was "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," there is now "Robin Hood," prince of duds. Where once we could look forward to "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "The Last of the Mohicans," we can now look forward to "Dinner for Schmucks" and "The Last Airbender." This time two years ago we were treated to the ingenious, subversive "Iron Man"; this year we have the insipid, uninspired "Iron Man 2."

I love bad movies with charm.

Shocking. Homowood needs reform. Normal Americans are sick of the marketing of sexual perversion, smearing Christianity, hyping violence, degradation of the human spirit, and leftist politics. Give us old-fashioned sex between normal sexually dimorphic males and females, tone down the violence, stop maligning what is good with America, stop the Christian bigotry, and market individualism and freedom.

I stumbled upon that movie late one night when I was in college. I'd never heard of it, but it is a good movie with an interesting story idea. I'd recommend it to anyone.

But could you compare even “Book of Eli” to “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “The Maltese Falcon” or “Lawrence of Arabia”?

No....not even close....but very few American made movies of the last 10 years could hold a candle to the many classics.

“Plan9 From Outer Space” is often touted as the “worst movie of all time”, but it doesn’t come close....

The worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life, I saw in the past year: Boondock Saints II.

Holy crap, that flick stunk on ice! bad acting, bad writing, bad cinematography.....just bad!

36 Hours is a great movie. Lots of dialog, when acting really was acting. The twist at the end was interesting.

I saw Inception. Not at all political. Fantastic movie. Reminded me a bit of the Matrix.

At least Plan 9 falls under “So bad it’s good.” I watch it every once in a while as a comedy.

I guess I am the only person alive that did not think Battlefield Earth was the worst movie ever. But then again, I walked out of Top Gun when the flight instructor fell in love with the student—because THAT was real....

I liked the Blind side and Gran turino, oh and we enjoyed the quirky “the box.”

"Toy Story 3" is the only 2010 release I've seen, and it sounds like I've been right in avoiding all the others.

Don't give up hope just yet. There is still time enough in the year for there to be a "Saw VII."

I saw Inception last night in IMAX. Pretty cool movie. Lots better than Ferngully, oops...I mean Avatar. (And I saw Ferngully on TV the other day...that one holds up well.)

I’d like anything with James Garner.

i take it you haven't been subjected to the divine secrets of the ya ya sisterhood.

Thanks. I should probably stop reading IMDB before I see a movie, but after reading the FR thread, I started reading the reviews. I see some people arguing about plot holes, etc., but you get complainers in every crowd.

I’m trying to drag my adult son out with me; it’s either this or Toy Story 3. Check out IMDB for all the grown guys crying at the end of that one!

Its one of the “okay” ones. Anyone but a jaded teenager should enjoy it.

And “Nightfall” was a GREAT book.
Sad that the movie didn’t come close.

Just my opinion

It's wrong, all the same. I just watched the 41 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It. Great Movie. /s

Real title...I kid you not.

I suggest a special triple-bill: Ishtar, Plan 9 From Outer Space and Battlefield Earth

Add in "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes."
