Suggestions on a holster for a Walther P99QA
FlGoldwingguy

Posted on 07/29/2010 10:56:18 PM PDT by FlGoldwingGuy

My CCW is enroute. I am looking for any suggestions on a holster for my Walther P99QA. I am leaning towards a paddle holster (and no not for a canoe paddle..before someone goes there *grin*). Pros/cons?

I've carried before in former service, that of being a reserve LEO. So I'm used to carrying the firearm on the duty belt. However in this situation, I will be carrying under a suit jacket or bulky shirt. So, paddle holster or on the belt? I've looked at the Forbus holster but I know there are lots more out there.

Thanks, Flgoldwingguy

More info required. IWB? OWB? Carry in office or after work? What style of dress? Will FL temperature bother the setup? What kind of threat environment? Will fellow workers know/mind if you carry?

Inquiring minds need to know.....(grin)

I was leaning towards OWB. I plan to carry it all the time (except at work..it’s not allowed by company rules). I’ll be wearing either a suit coat, sports jacket, or bulky tshirts, jerseys, and in the winter months sweat shirts, rugby shirts et al.

I live in an area that warrants carrying concealed. While I’ve not had an altercation to this point, I’m always in a situation awareness mode. I think the best way to put it, is the area is well known to law enforcement.

I like the paddle holster, however I have this image..of drawing my weapon, and having to say..”oh wait a minute” as I pull the holster off.

Thanks very much for your post. I would never have heard of Cross-Breed holsters without your suggestion. It is the vast knowledge, and experience that makes Freepers and the Free Republic so great. Thanks again.

Has anyone else tried the Cross-Breed IWB holsters? I have seen the reviews on you tube. I am very impressed. I do have one question in regards to IWB holsters. While I don’t have a “svelte - cougar like frame” anymore, I’m 5’10, 205. So has anyone used either the Cross-Breed or other IWB holter carrying a few extra pounds?

Probably have better luck with specifics on your question on either the Walther forum, or a concealed carry-specific forum.

Don't have the links at hand, but a metacrawler.com search should lead you to one of them.

Paddle holsters have their place, but they're not the best for concealed carry. Is there a reason for needing to remove and remount the holster in your daily activities? If not, you'd be better off with a strong side carry rig, coupled with a genuine gun belt. I have a trunk full of holsters for all occasions, including paddle style. The ones used the most by far are OWB scabbard style with widely spaced belt loops. They pull tight against the body and evenly distribute the gun's weight on the belt, facilitating concealment.

I know a guy that is 6’ 1” and 225 that carries a HK USP Compact in .45 with an IWB holster. The extra pounds around the waist actually help. Just be sure to use a heavy duty belt. With a 2X t-shirt he’s good to go...

Remember, The first “C” stands for concealed.

The unseen gun causes no panic.

stay safe.

Nothing wrog with a Forbus. Stay with the familiar. In a crisis, the mind goes BLANK and training takes over.

Crossbreeds are nice. I like mine. The Fobus would do ok for you too. Get both. Sometimes you might prefer one style of carry over the other. Don't worry about the Fobus coming off as you draw. Get a good belt to wear under it and that will not happen.

Carrying IWB with a few extra pounds is no biggy. Only depends on having enough extra room in the size of pants you have one and having a good belt. I have a few pounds on you and am of similar height. When I carry IWB it is with a full size 1911.

There is also the Minotaur from comp-tac which is similar to the Crossbreed.

I too have a Walther P99. I love it. Great gun; has never jammed on me, and I plan on bequething it to my son someday; but golly you have a task ahead of you concealing that thing. It is not small!

Love the Crossbreed - my father-in-law pointed me to them, he carries a full-frame 1911A IWB. I had a Kimber Ultra Carry that I carried with zero issues, very comfortable. I could stand lose a few poinds myself...
Also check out the M-Tac, from Comp-Tac. I use this one for my HK USP and it is VERY comfortable. However, a good gunbelt is a must (for any IWB). I have a Beltman belt I am wearing right now, and am going to order one from Crossbreed as well.

The DeSantis mini-slide, a high-ride OWB maybe a good choice

It is available with or without a thumb break - depends on how much jogging you plan on doing.

The high-ride does not interfere with seat-belt use and can can be used as a kind of ‘in the back’ carry if you have a need.

Quality leather and a well known US company.

YMMV

Those Crossbreed rigs look nice; I’ll have to consider one of those for my XD45 Compact. That “Minituck” for the Ruger LCP is really nice, too - wish he’d make one like that fitted to the H&K P7. I picked up one of those recent German police trade-ins and found it still in the Heckler & Koch packing oil - a real time-warp. Tough to get a good IWB holster for it, though - the best rigs out there have waiting lists from up to 2 years. The way things are going, I don’t think it prudent to wait that long...
