Diane Mapes writes: Weve all heard the stories of people keeping outrageous numbers of animals. The Today Show ran a segment on the topic just last week, to coincide with the premiere of Animal Planets new show, Confessions: Animal Hoarders.
But why is it so many of these tales seem to involve women and cats?
There was the elderly woman in Phoenix with 104 cats, 10 of them dead and tucked into freezers; the woman in Greeley, Colo., whose house was condemned after authorities discovered she was harboring 83 felines. Women cat hoarders have been discovered in Citrus Heights, Calif., where a woman and her mother had 60 cats; Orange City, Fla., where rescue workers discovered an unconscious woman surrounded by 59 cats and Piney Flats, Tenn., where a 64-year-old woman was found living in a trailer with 31 cats.
And thats just so far this month.
Is there something that makes women more prone to animal hoarding than men?

Because they like ro party, silly!
Guys don't like the parties that we cats and girls do.
Awww...here, kitty, kitty....
Now Chet...please don’t target felines like the pits you post about. Kitties are wonderful creatures...and you will not find a lot of stories about them ripping faces off or killing toddlers etc...
Speaking as a woman, dogs are cleaner than cats. I don’t mind pooper scooping the yard, but cleaning a cat box is gross.
We had two dogs and two cats at one time and I much preferred the dogs. My husband was a cat person, so guess who got to clean the cat box? LOL
Our kitties and the two original dogs have passed on. My husband is now the #1 fan of our Jack Russell and I’m the #1 fan of our elderly black Lab mix. No more kitties.
Cat herding is popular with the guys.

It’s love. Strange twisted love. So many of these stories turn out to be women who feel neglected and have lost people and relationships. Security and love are huge issues for women, moreso than men.
Animals can be kept and love you, and never leave you. They are the ultimate cross between something you own yet something that loves you back.
Of course, once you get past a certain threshold, you can’t get rid of them because it’s just physically impossible. Who is going to take 100 cats? Where would you put them? These people are often devastated to give them up because they know they just are going to be euthanized.
On top of it, many of these women are elderly and physically ill, and they can’t actually physically get going. Remember, if the authorities find out you have a ton of cats, many (especially blue states) will come after them legally for animal abuse, so they are afraid to ask authorities for help.
Some years ago, I was in the line at the grocery store.
I was behind a woman who was buying several plants that appeared to be dead. I told her she should go back over to the plant department because I saw some nice ones over there.
She said that, no, she wanted those because if she did not buy them “nobody else would”. She was planning on nursing the dead plants back to life!
It is some sort of misplaced altruism.
“Shark Week” is coming up on the Discovery Channel, maybe they can do a show where a land shark attacks a cat lady and her cats.
A crazy cat lady is what I aim to be in my old age! I only have 3 cats now, though!
I could tell cat lady stories all day. One lady had so many cats in her apartment that the apartment underneath her complained that cat urine was leaking down into it. The same lady loved one of her cats so much that when it died she slept with it for two weeks after it passed on. I refuse to see her or her cats because she is absolutely nuts.
Never tease me again for having four cats!
Oh wait. That wasn’t you, was it...
LOL!
T’wern’t me.
I once walked into a house where the woman of the house owned sixteen cats. The house looked immaculate....and smelled liked cat urine and disinfectant.
