WEST HAVEN A city man was charged with animal cruelty Thursday after neighbors heard a golden retriever yelping in pain.
Robert Barnes, 25, of 24 Lester St., second floor, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. Responding police officers found neighbors outside to report the sounds they had heard. Police found a 7-month-old golden retriever with severe injuries consistent with being beaten, Sgt. Martin Garcia said.
Neighbors reported hearing the yelps from 200 yards away. At one point, bangs, which witnesses believe was the dog being thrown against a wall or the floor, were loud enough to shake a neighbors kitchen windows.
The dog, which was limping and cowering, was taken to a veterinary hospital where it was treated for shoulder and leg injuries, as well as older injuries including scarring and infection, Garcia said. The dog, which belongs to an acquaintance of Barnes, will be re-evaluated this morning, Garcia said.
Barnes posted $7,500 bail, Garcia said, and is due July 13 in Superior Court in Milford.
Was it his dog?
It is the friend who is the owner that most needs to handle this.
So what?
The so-called owner isn’t much of one, seeing as how this has apparently been going on for at least seven months.
The dog needs to be turned over to a rescue organization where it will be loved and trained. Even if he recovers from the physical injuries, it will take a long time for his spirit to recover — if ever.
The perp needs to be jailed.
Some here believe that an "owner" should be able to do with an animal as he/she pleases (including torture) because they think the bible gives them license to do so.
Put this cowedly PIS in a room for 30 seconds with me, he’ll never hurt anyone or anything ever again
I volunteer to handle the owner and the abuser. I promise it won’t take longer than 20 minutes total. Just put me in an unfurnished room with them both. That’s why God gave me fingernails and teeth.
I bet you can't kill your own terminally ill pet in some jurisdictions now.
I don't believe in torturing anyone but Islamists and ex wives and my daughter's boyfriends but elevating dog pain stories to like human status...and consequence is just weird to me.
Considering what we ignore by the millions.
too bad it couldn't have been a pitbull eh?...course bulldogs are tough tough tough...I'm learning...My ABD is the strongest most heart critter I have ever seen in my life.
I get in my kids 4 wheeler and he races me across our pastures..like windsprints...400 yards each way...3-5 times...slobbers a bit and then some water and he's back to normal in a few minutes
they are incredible...not wonder assh*les fight them for betting
No, the article says it belongs to an acquaintance. I hope the owner as well as LE get the guy who did this.
Inbred mouth breather.
Someone needs to explain that, even in a Ken MacLeod-esque libertarian sci-fi fantasy world, the dog owner would simply contract another party to throw the abuser into a privately run, for-profit, prison. After the contract was adjudicated, of course.
Comparing the mercy of putting a sick or injured animal out of its misery with this sorry wast of protoplasm beating and abusing a puppy is not a valid comparison. Some are entirely too quick to euthanize, though, out of a lack of empathy or just sheer laziness.
We’re responsible for the animals in our care; we’re their stewards. They’re part of our households and we are held to account, in this world and in the judgment to come.
Effing ahole.
