Conn. man, 25, accused of severely beating golden retriever; neighbors hear yelps, bangs

WEST HAVEN — A city man was charged with animal cruelty Thursday after neighbors heard a golden retriever yelping in pain.

Robert Barnes, 25, of 24 Lester St., second floor, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. Responding police officers found neighbors outside to report the sounds they had heard. Police found a 7-month-old golden retriever with severe injuries consistent with being beaten, Sgt. Martin Garcia said.

Neighbors reported hearing the yelps from 200 yards away. At one point, bangs, which witnesses believe was the dog being thrown against a wall or the floor, were loud enough to shake a neighbor’s kitchen windows.

The dog, which was limping and cowering, was taken to a veterinary hospital where it was treated for shoulder and leg injuries, as well as older injuries including scarring and infection, Garcia said. The dog, which belongs to an acquaintance of Barnes, will be re-evaluated this morning, Garcia said.

Barnes posted $7,500 bail, Garcia said, and is due July 13 in Superior Court in Milford.

I seriously doubt that it costs "hundreds" to euthanize a dog. I wish this were a weekday so that I could check in with my vet. I have had it done but never paid any attention to the price.

Bingo, here we have a bunch of people that call themselves conservative, whining about how someone treats their personal property. Do I need approval from you fake conservatives the next time I cut the balls off of a calf. That being said he should not be beating up on the dog because it makes him feel better. But had the same animal been running lose on my property there would not have been a yelp louder than the bark of the 22-250.

It somewhat depends on what type of service you ask for. If all you want is a killshot, and take the body with you, it is cheaper than a sedative before the killshot, and body disposal service.

Thanks. They mean the world to me. The big one loves my daughter more than the world. Lord help anyone that messes with her when he's around. He has a very violent zero tolorance policy to anyone that would harm her...

Our black GSD, Ika is getting the same way but I haven't gotten a pic of him cuddling with her yet. But here he is with one of his toys...

How anyone can harm a dog is beyond me. They deserve our respect and love, not abuse. The last pic here is Sasha, she was found in a house in PG county that was to be destroyed. She was literally rescued at the last minute from both the house and the shelter. How can you not love this face...

I have a soft spot for GSD’s. Though they do have their moments. They are too smart for their own good. They shed. They are quite stubborn. They shed. They have absolutely no concept of personal space (ever have an 80 pound dog climb into the shower with you?). They shed.

But, with all that, knowing that my little girl is safe and they’ll protect her makes all the above worth it. And they do make great companions and friends.

So... I’ll plug the Virginia German Shepherd Rescue at http://www.shepherdrescue.org/ for great dogs that need great homes.

Most do. Ika, the black GSD, sheds some, Sasha, very little, Max... well, let’s just say that I could probably have someone knit a comforter for a king size bed every few weeks with his sheddings.

He’s really blowing his coat out now too...
