GRANDVIEW, Manitoba - An 80-year-old Canadian bison rancher says people have come from around the world to see his prized animals , which he allows to roam around his house.
Henry Makinson, whose farm is located about halfway between Grandview and Roblin in Manitoba, said he sold a female for more than $48,000, more than five times the price of an average bison, because of the beauty and health of his animals, the Winnipeg Free Press reported Monday.
Markinson said his bison, which perform tricks, including a conga-like dance, for rodeos and over events, are allowed to roam his one-room farmhouse as well as his larger home, although some of them choose to stay out.
"They hate walking on linoleum," Makinson said. "But Cathy (one of the bison) will get in my living room with the carpeting and she doesn't want to leave. She just wants to lie down and snooze."
Makinson said he has suffered numerous injuries while training and performing with the bison. He was trampled last year when a gate was left open while he was loading the animals into a vehicle. However, he said he loves the creatures as pets and has no plans to get rid of them.
Makinson said other bison ranchers "think I'm crazy, because a buffalo will kill you."
When you visit his home, does he provide the hip-boots, or do you bring your own?
I love it! I wish I was there but I could not be a rancher. Maybe shearing sheep.
IS that the guy having coffee with the Bison? He does not look 80 years old.
No worse than going to the restroom at the Kuwait airport.
Wow

about “picked him up on its horn”. . .
“And this winter, while feeding the bison, one named Patrick butted him gently to push him away and its horn caught under Makinson’s snowmobile suit belt. “He lifted his head and lifted me up. He was carrying me. He was backing up and I was dangling from his horn.” It hurt his back but he says he’s mostly recovered now.”
Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam
And the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

Wow. Patrick is the size of a smaller pickup truck. They are really a throwback to 10,000 years ago or so.
That was 60 years ago, LOL, when cowboys had to sing.
People are so quick to jump to conclusions.
Last time I was in Yellow Stone a Japanese tourist was killed by a Bison because he went to put his arm around it while his picture was taken by his wife. The Buffalo evidently didn’t like it much.
Now that looks like fun! lol But I have to correct their figures. 30 mph is way more than three times faster than I can run.
I’d much rather deal with cattle than shear sheep.
Most of the sheepmen now hire the spring shearing done by lads from NZ and Oz. The really good ones (when they’re sober) can shear a ewe in about one minute, and keep the staple long with no second cuts. They’re amazing to watch.
