This is not an important question and you can ignore it if you wish.
I have been listening to Rush Limbaugh since 1998 ( only when I can of course), but for the life of me cannot understand why he does the following ( I am sure he has reasons but I've never heard him explain it ) :
* When he mentions Jesse Jackson, he never used the name : "Jesse Jackson", but almost always says -- The Reverend Jackson, in a very strange tone, as if trying to sound very respectful ( I can't quite describe it. Experienced listeners will understand ).
* Where on earth is Rio Linda and why does he refer to that place everytime he mentions some important FACTOID that we all should know...
* Why does he mock the Former Secretary of Labor's name everytime he uses it as in ROBERT REICHSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS ( lasting about 10 seconds ).
Let's start with the above 3 first and I'm sure I have other Limbaugh mannerisms I'd like to ask about later.
Thanks.
I have NEVER understood “Open Line Friday”.
i.e exactly how it is different from any other day.
Funny, he just mentioned the Reverend!!! Ive always heard him call him that. I dont think its out of respect though. Why is he a Reverend???? Kinda like Sharpton??? What church are they of
1. He is lampooning the way the Rev talks.
2. He is providing further explanation for the folks who may no be able to grasp what is being said. At some point, he felt that Rio Linda, CA was a hotbed of this. There may be more to the Rio Linda thing but I am unfamiliar with it.
3. He is making fun of Reich’s sense of, shall we say, “self-importance”.
Read his first 2 books and you questions will be answered.
He's mocking Jesse Jagmo's talking style.
* Where on earth is Rio Linda and why does he refer to that place everytime he mentions some important FACTOID that we all should know...
Rio Linda is a suburb of Sacramento, where Rush started...in the early days, he would get some really ignorant calls from folks in Rio Linda.
* Why does he mock the Former Secretary of Labor's name everytime he uses it as in ROBERT REICHSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS ( lasting about 10 seconds ).
Not sure why.
Of course, if you had read his books, you'd know some of this.
I’m sure you will get better answers, but for the Revvvveerrandd Jackson, he is making fun of his title.
I’ll take the first one: What church is Jesse Jackson a reverend of? No real church.
Rush is mocking him.
I can answer that. During his presidential runs in the 80s, Jackson frequently talked about himself in the 3rd person. He has a very clipped way of talking, as if every word is its own sentence. Rush is talking this way to mock him.
I was confused at first about it too.
I believe the Jesse Jackson one came from making fun of how Dan Rather introduced him.
Rio Linda is in California, where Rush worked for some time.
On Open Line Friday the calls are whatever the caller wants to talk about...not what Rush wants to talk about...theoretically.
Sure...many of his ideas make sense; and I'm not nearly smart enough to debate with him....but still!
I believe he uses these the same way Jack Benney used, "Welllll!"
They are professional gambits that got a great deal of acceptance the first time he used them....and he'll continue to do so until he gets word that the phrases are not "working" anymore.
Then he'll change to something else.
Whatever the formula....he sure as heck knows what he'd doing!
On Open Line Friday the callers can call in and discuss anything they want- within reason, I assume. Mon-Thurs he talks about what he wants to talk about.
Because Jackson and Reich pronouce their own names that way.
He makes fun of Rio Linda because early in his radio career, he got a bunch of dumb callers from Rio Linda.
Pop a few Oxycontins and it'll all make sense.
I disagree. He said many think so but that he really is imitating how Wm. F. Buckley said the Most Reverand's name
I think he was emulating the way William Buckley said “the Reverend Jackson”
I'm driving down this two-lane road, and I see houses with refrigerators, the door is open on the porch. I see cars jacked up on concrete blocks in the front yard, dogs running around chasing garbage in the front yards, and I said "Whoa, what is this place?" So I went back and I asked people at the radio station, KFBK, "What is this Rio Linda place?" And they said, "Well, it is what it is; there are some nice areas of it, too, but you just happened to go through the bad part." So I offered, after having seen the place -- and I used to have a shtick back then of always picking a local community and making fun of it just as a broadcast technique -- so I offered to move there to elevate property values if they would rename the place Limbaugh, California. They refused, of course. I also tried the same thing with West Sacramento, and that bombed out as well. But ever since Rio Linda has just been my pet little favorite community to pick on. Property values have since risen out there. But you can drive and still see some of the things I saw when you drive through town. I love the people of Rio Linda and I want to make sure they understand what's being discussed on the program, so I always will change or expand certain words' definition so they are not left out. It's an act of true compassion by a broadcast specialist.
Can't remember the specific story on Rio Linda.
He is mocking the way RR says his own last name.
