Race Bannon and I were up in the woods trying out his new M1A, nice piece of machinery.

Both Race and I wear Bifocals. I have never used a scope but he bought one and he needs some tips on how to get used to the thing. He was brought up on the M 16 when he was in the Crotch and the M1A is a different anamal, all tips are welcombe.

First tip. If you’re using a scope, you don’t need to wear the bifocals or any other type of glasses.

Second tip. You need to maintain a good spot weld between your check and the butt of the rifle. I’ve owned a M1A with a scope and found that the height of the scope required using a pad on the butt to allow contact with the check and the butt. You can get them a lot of places. Cheaperthandirt, midway, etc.

Up here in my Great White North, as no doubt in yours, Scopes are a luxury 30 to 40 yards is a normal deer shoot, all second growth timber and brush, Iron Sights are point and click.

Ditto. My eyes are so bad that most everything I have, including several of my handguns, are scoped. My bifocals are about 2x and I've found I can use drug store 1.25x for handgun practice out to about 15 yards with iron sights.

Race mentioned that, kind of out of my experience, I learned in the “Cheek Your Piece” school and because of the terrain never owned a scope.

My handguns are fine, but I can’t shoot a rifle without a scope because of my vision.

With scope take off or lift up glasses, same as when using my telescope or binoculars.

As others have said, no need for the glasses when looking through the scope, or binoc’s for that matter.

Lose the glasses while shooting and you will be happy.

What kind of scope?

A “scout” type scope has enough eye relief so that you could probably use it with or without glasses. I wear progressive lenses, and find that it’s way easier just to shoot without eye glasses when using a scope.

The hell you say. I need to see after I shoot. All of my scopes and my binos work with my spec’s.

Hint: Don’t by cheap opticals.

To: MileHi; All

optics arent cheap!

Hey, Little Bill was telling me something, was there a guy a few months ago who claimed his M1A all of a sudden went on full auto???

The guy claimed to pull the trigger and it went off on full auto all by itself and he got arrested for having a full auto weapon when he claimed it was store bought and it happened to his shock??

Well, not a few months ago a guy was convicted of having a “rogue” AR-15. He claimed it malfunctioned, don’t recall the whole story. Maybe that was it?

Read up a bit about the M14/M1A scope mounts first, they can be problematic if you have an aluminum mount, I have an M1A with a Leupold on it, there is a trick with getting the alignment just right and to keep it there, there are better more precised machined mounts, kinda spendy though.

Its basically the original big bad boy of the Mini-14, 150-168 grain bullets work best, get the lug wrench as almost nothing else will work without damaging it. And there is some cartridges to avoid like the plague, off hand I think they are some steel cases with corrosive powder, and yes you can shoot regular .308Win hunting bullets, but if you go heavier than than 168gr. you may have accuracy problems or you will damage the bolt.

Cheapest plinking rounds are usually the 147gr. FMJ.

Not that it matters much for the question asked, but what are you shooting; an M1 or M14?
