MOSCOW - Any dachshund owner knows the feisty breed rarely backs off from a challenge, but one in Russia is taking that reputation to new heights or depths.
The dog named Boniface is learning how to scuba dive.
Owner Sergei Gorbunov, a professional diver in the Pacific Coast city of Vladivostok had a diving suit complete with helmet made for the dog and is teaching him the tricks of the trade.
In a recent demonstration, Boniface barked eagerly as Gorbunov readied the equipment and uncomplainingly endured being hung upside-down as Gorbunov fitted the suit on him.
Once underwater, he seemed to have a different outlook, emitting some high-pitched whines.
Gobunov says, "Underwater, I don't think he experiences any stress."
“Well, Sergei, it’s been fun getting to know you and your dog, but now it’s time to play ‘You Bet Your Life.’”
Apologies to Groucho.
The dog’s nam is Boniface? Sounds like the diver is a Christian. Boniface was the Apostle of the Germans. Dachshunds are German pups.
Oddly Saint Boniface is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Lutherans and Anglicans.
His missionary work went all over Germany, parts of France and England.
Right, no stress. This is totally natural activity for a dog.
Not a chance in hell could we get our dachshund anywhere near that rig.
I actually laughed at the title "Teaching..."......Yea, right.
Hey dog, grab your gear. Today's the day for your certification test.......
More than twenty years ago, maybe thirty? Mac and Muttley the local show after the CBS evening news in the Bay Area, Mac was the nickname for a local news guy, he took that silly dog, who’d been saved from being put to sleep at the pound, all over the place, all kinds of different activities, one of them was scuba diving. It was the cutest thing to see Muttley, his head in the giant bubble, his curly hair floating in the water. He enjoyed it, it didn’t seem to cause any trouble, no danger to the dog.
Would ask 'why' this venture; but why ask. . .why?
They completely live in the moment and fear not death nor injury. Any attention is good attention.
Don’t think mine would be impressed either.
So true. They want companionship and some food.
