Since Google felt the need to honor the birthday of a communist today I though Free Republic should respond with someone a little more appropriate.

John Paul Jones' tomb at the United States Naval Academy is guarded by Midshipmen 24 hours a day.

It’s amazing to thing that this great American hero lay in an unmarked grave in France for 100 years.

As a second class mid my husband’s roommate told us that there was a window in the container where you could see him. We looked all over before we decided they were kidding with us. It is really a beautiful place.

I hope to see it someday. Back in the 50’s the USS Block Island was a training ship at UNNA. My father served on the Block Island in the Pacific in 1945.

They didn’t fool you with the old gag about a ship hanging from the ceiling in the chapel did they?

No, I had already seen the Chapel. Some of the tales that come out of these Naval Academy guys. In fact, we would not let the kids around when they were drinking and started their stories. To this day, I am hearing new ones every so often. They graduated in ‘73!

At the age of thirteen he made his first trip in the Friendship (1761) to Fredericksburg, Virginia; a second voyage there was made in 1762.... ..and people here gripe about that 16 year old girl being allowed to attempt to sail around the world by herself. Maybe we need more young people who are given higher expectations than babied.

I don’t really have an opinion about the 16 year old sailing alone, but I’m glad my 13 year old son doesn’t have to go to sea or become an apprentice somewhere. Sometimes we don’t realize how fortunate we are.

Good point. On the other hand, the taxpayers of Australia didn't have to spend $300,000 to save John Paul Jones when he got in over his head. :)
