At the age of thirteen he made his first trip in the Friendship (1761) to Fredericksburg, Virginia; a second voyage there was made in 1762....

..and people here gripe about that 16 year old girl being allowed to attempt to sail around the world by herself. Maybe we need more young people who are given higher expectations than babied.

I don’t really have an opinion about the 16 year old sailing alone, but I’m glad my 13 year old son doesn’t have to go to sea or become an apprentice somewhere. Sometimes we don’t realize how fortunate we are.

Good point. On the other hand, the taxpayers of Australia didn't have to spend $300,000 to save John Paul Jones when he got in over his head. :)
